Admiral Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, 1st Baron Mountevans of Chelsea KCB DSO (1881-1957), known as "Teddy" Evans, was a British naval officer and Antarctic explorer. He served as second-in-command on Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913 and as captain of the expedition ship Terra Nova. He attended the Royal Naval College from 1900-1902. In 1900 he was promoted to Acting Sub- Lieutenant, then Sub-Lieutenant and Lieutenant in 1902 and then served as second officer of the Morning from 1901 till 1904. Scott offered Evans the position with his second expedition as a means of persuading him to drop plans for his own competing expedition to explore King Edward VII Land. In Antarctica, he was initially in charge of Scott's motor-sledge party. After the sledges broke down, he continued south, man-hauling, as the leader of the last supporting party to accompany Scott to the pole. After hearing from Scott that he was not going to be one of the men making the final push to the South Pole, he turned back in 1912, within 150 miles of the pole.… (más)

Trumped up reminiscence of Robert Scott's doomed south polar expedition. Full of inaccuracies and liberties with the actual facts. Lots also left out in order for the entire thing to appear in a better, more heroic, light (Read Apsley Cherry-Garrard's biography [b:Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard|1265536|Cherry A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard|Sara Wheeler|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1182363171s/1265536.jpg|1254417] for a more accurate view). Mountevans gives himself a larger and more noble roll in the entire affair than he actually had. He was largely untouchable by the time he wrote this due to his distinguished military career.

This book and Mountevans "recollection" of events would scar the more courageous Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life (He was already riddled with guilt and doubt about his role. ( )

Then Lieutenant, Evans gives his account of Scott's final Antarctic expedition. He was second in command. Evans was not chosen to go to the South Pole so he survived. ( )

Incredibly understated story of endurance. Teddy Evans was with Scott to within a fortnight of the South Pole in 1912 when he and two others were not selected for the final push. The story of the expedition from one or survived - just - and who was close to Scott. ( )

Loved it. Have 2 copies of it, quite by chance. Evans and scott didn't get along according to other sources, but you'd never know it from this account.
They are so brave and manly!!!! ( )
