Join a busy mama and her baby at a traditional Nigerian market. An introduction to numbers.

Set in a market in South West Nigeria, Baby and Mama are reminded of the value of community as vendors happily give Baby everything from chin-chin biscuits to slices of coconut.

diverse picture book (counting, food / ages 3-6)
* Book prominently features diverse cast: yes! Set in an "a bustling southwest Nigerian marketplace" and written by a Nigerian storyteller (with roots in West Africa, England and Wales). It is an all-black cast.
* Would it work for storytime? The story is a little long, so I would guess older preschoolers (or younger kids who are accustomed to sitting through stories), ages 3-6. The illustrations are vibrant and beautiful.
* Does it work with the counting theme? Sort of. Though numbers pop up frequently in the text, the countable objects aren't as visible as you'd like for a storytime setting. You could count them in a one-on-one reading, but the story is more centered on Baby's mischievous adventures. ( )

The book is filled with bright colors and detailed illustrations. The main character is a baby and his mother who are shopping at the market. The baby receives fruits and treats throughout the day without his mother noticing. The baby would eat of what was given to him, but would save the rest by putting it on his mother's basket. This book a great book for students to follow along by adding and subtracting what is in the basket. ( )

After reading the No. 1 Boy and the Firebird to my six year old granddaughter, I decided to see how she liked other books by this author. This is our third read together and she loves the story line, the colorful illustrations and anticipating what comes next as we turn the pages. This, and the other books by this author are great ones to engage and expand younger kids imaginations. ( )
