For fans of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events and Trenton Lee Stewart's Mysterious Benedict Society, here comes the final book in the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place, the acclaimed and hilarious Victorian mystery series by Maryrose Wood.

Unhappy Penelope Lumley is trapped in unhappy Plinkst! Even the beets for which Plinkst is inexplicably famous fail to grow in this utterly miserable Russian village. Penelope anxiously counts the days and wonders how she will ever get back to England in time to save all the Ashtonsâ??who, she now knows, include herself and the Incorrigible children, although their precise location on the family tree is still a mysteryâ??from their accursèd fate.

Her daring scheme to escape sends her on a wildly unexpected journey. But time is running out, and the not-really-dead Edward Ashton is still on the loose. His mad obsession with the wolfish curse on the Ashtons puts Penelope and the Incorrigibles in dire peril. As Penelope fights her way back to her beloved pupils, the three brave Incorrigibles endure their gloomy new tutor and worriedly prepare for the arrival of Lady Constance's baby. Little do they know the danger they're in!

In this action-packed conclusion to the acclaimed series, mysteries are solved and long-lost answers are found. Only one question remains: Will Penelope and the Incorrigibles find a way to undo the family curse in time, or will the next full moon be their la… (más)

I love this series and the characters, but this part of the story wasn't quite as good as the majority of the series. For much of it, there weren't the same character dynamics that were present in the other books; the tale also was just not wrapped up as well as it could have been, I don't think.
However, I was glad to reach the end of the journey with this crew, and all in all I'd read the whole series again. If you start the series, you definitely need to finish it through to the end, and it is worth the time. ( )

In which a truly dramatic story concludes, with satisfying resolutions, unexpected coincidences, and a final reveal of the Ashton family tree. Silly, tense in places, magical and soothing. Well read audio, too. ( )

All questions about The Incorrigibles and their family history are answered in the sixth and final installment of the series.

I have listened to all of these books on audio and Katherine Kellgren’s whole-hearted narration has kept me coming back. She threw everything she had into howling at the moon, singing songs, and giving voices to both the innocent and the bad guys. I realized that Katherine had passed away before finishing the series as I added this book to my shelves and I was crushed. Fiona Hardingham ably stepped in to fill the void and did a marvelous job while being true to her own, slightly more sedate style, but I missed Ms. Kellgren’s spirited reading terribly. The author included a wonderful dedication to Katherine at the end that almost left me in tears.

That out of the way, I was so glad to finally wrap this mystery up! I truly enjoy reading about Penelope, Alexander, Beowulf, Cassiopeia, and company, but the series was about one book too long for me. Readers have had all the pieces of the puzzle in hand for a while, so it was just a matter of waiting for the characters to put it together. It was gratifying to watch them finally do that, even if there were a lot of unlikely coincidences. Still, the book is fun and written with tongue very much in cheek, so it doesn’t expect to be taken too seriously. Middle grade readers and other fans of the series will be pleased with the ending, if a bit sad to leave these characters behind. ( )

My children and I found this an enjoyable read, but they were a little disappointed. They said that the characters didn't act like themselves, and I can see their point. There are some drastic and abrupt personality changes here and some characters that get left behind rather unceremoniously.

Our blah reaction might be in part a result of Katherine Kellgren's absence as narrator. We started listening to the audiobook narrated by Fiona Hardingham, but after two chapters, we returned the audiobook and purchased the hardcover instead. While we might have found it delightful if Hardingham had been the narrator for the other five books, we missed Kellgren so much that we opted read this one aloud together rather than listen to the audio version. The read-aloud was fun, but all of those voices hurt my throat, and my children are unforgiving critics of my Russian accent. I have neither solicited nor received feedback about my performance from the neighbors who got to hear me reading through our open windows.

Flaws aside, this was a good cap for the series, and I am glad we finally got closure. ( )

A fine ending to an enjoyable series. A back cover blurb sums it up perfectly: "Jane Eyre meets Lemony Snicket in this smart, surprising satire." Our Jane Eyre stand-in, governess Penelope Lumley, finds herself exiled to Russia and spends most of the book on a quest to return to Ashton Place to protect her young wards, the mostly-reformed-but-still-a-touch-feral Incorrigible children.

What I didn't love was our young heroine reveling in felony-level fraud as part of her escape from Russia. That does not seem like something a Swanburne girl would do.

That misstep aside, I love the constant humorous digressions to define words and idioms or discuss poems, plays and novels. ( )
