Wells ben ik diep, diep onder de indruk van zijn vrije geest. De verhalen in deze uitgave (naast The Island of Doctor Moreau bevat het ook Aepyornis Island, The Sea Raiders en The Empire of the Ants) zijn alle geschreven eind negentiende eeuw en hebben de frisheid van onze tijd. Ongelooflijk hoeveel er op zijn ideeën is gebaseerd en alleen daarom is het een must-read voor alle science fiction liefhebbers. Het blijkt ook dat al zijn boeken nog altijd uitgegeven worden en terecht, wat een visionair. The Island of Doctor Moreau is het verslag van een opvarende die aanspoelt op een eiland waar Doctor Moreau regeert en experimenteert. De verteller ontmoet beestachtige mensen (of zijn het mensachtige beesten?) die het resultaat zijn van Doctor Moreau zijn experimenten. In de extra notities van deze uitgave wordt verteld dat in H.G. Wells zijn tijd er een felle discussie over vivisectie op dieren woedde. In onze tijd is de discussie over het experimenteren op dieren nog lang niet uitgeraasd, al lijken de rechten voor dieren wel wat toe te nemen. In ieder geval is het een onderwerp dat nog altijd zeer actueel is en met alle wetenschappelijke mogelijkheden misschien nog wel steeds actueler wordt. De andere korte verhalen in deze uitgave gaan over het vinden van een uitgestorven dier (denk Jurrasic Park) en de mensheid die aangevallen wordt door verschillende soorten zwermen dieren. In het ene geval gaat het om een soort van kleine inktvissen en in het andere om groot uitgevallen mieren. De horror die uit deze verhalen spat, is er een waarvan nog heel wat schrijvers en scenaristen kunnen leren. Moreau's highly controversial methods and ambitions conflict with the religious, moral and scientific norms of his day and Wells later called 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' "a youthful exercise in blasphemy". Today his vivid depictions of the Beast People still strike modern readers with an uncanny glimpse of the animal in the human, while the behaviour of humans leave us wondering who is the most monstrous after all. This volume unites four of Wells' liveliest and most engaging tales of the strange evolution and behaviour of animals - including human beings. 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' is followed by three fantastic yet chillingly plausible short stories of human-animal encounters. 'The Empire of the Ants' is a darkly humorous account of intelligent Amazonian ants threatening to displace humans as "the lords of the future and masters of the earth". In 'The Sea Raiders', the south coast of England is terrorized by an unwelcome visit from deep-sea predator Haploteuthis ferox, while 'Aepyornis Island' provides a marooned egg collector with an unusual companion. Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) is famously often referred to as 'the father of science fiction' but Wells's phenomenal imagination ranged far and wide and included works of comic social realism. Such is Wells's facility with story-telling that well over a century after their publication, that his stories are as fresh and compelling to us today as they would have been when his initial readers first turned their pages, often in astonishment and frequently in amusement.
