Mildly enjoyable. Not among my favorite Nortons, I don't think, but fun to read. Two Garan stories - Garin the pilot comes to the lost land and, after adventures, discovers he belongs there (though the misunderstanding with Thran was stupid - actually, the second story may have been to explain that). Second story - a frame of Garin-now-Garan seeing the distant past, then an adventure there/then that explains a lot of the events of the first story. Interesting setting. Then two Witch World stories - one with Vale wizards, who...really don't show up on the novels, but there are several short stories about them. Legends? Anyway, a shapeshifter apprentice, a scamming wizard, and (of course) a lovely princess. Well - a smart, kind lord's daughter, anyway. Then one set after the Invaders war, with a decent man dealing with another sneaky SOB. The only question is where was Colin going when he left - was he just running away? Anyway, evil gets its just comeuppance, good gets its deserts (probably), and the story fades away. Very bardic and not particularly satisfying, to me. Also too predictable. But not bad, just not among her best. ( )

Garin of Tav:
Six months and three days after the Peace of Shanghai was signed and the Great War of 1985 - 88 declared at an end by an exhausted world, a young man huddled on a park bench in New York, staring forlornly at the gravel beneath his badly worn shoes.
Garan of Yu-Lac:
Often have I - who was Garin Featherstone in the world beyond the Mist Barrier, and am now Garan of the Flame, mate to that Royal Lady, Thrala, Daughter of the Ancient Ones - listened to the half-forgotten tales of that regal race who fled from a dying planet across the void of space to land upon the antarctic continent of our young world and blast out there the great crater of Tav for their future dwelling place.
One spell wizard:
In all professions there are not only the awe-inspiring great successes, and the forgotten failures, but also those who seem unable to climb the tallest peaks, yet do not tumble hopelessly into the chasms in between.
Legacy from Sorn Fen:
By the western wall of Klavenport on the Sea of Autumn Mists - but you do not want a bard's beginning to my tale, Goodmen?

This is a short story collection containing "Garin of Tav" (1947), "Garan of Yu-Lac" (1969), "Legacy from Sorn Fen", and "One-Spell Wizard". It should not be combined with any of the individual stories.
