In This Fallen Prey, the next installment of New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's thriller series, Casey Duncan is about to face her toughest job as police detective in Rockton yet.
When Casey first arrived at the off-the-grid town, an isolated community built as a haven for people running from their pasts, she had no idea what to expect, with no cell phones, no internet, no mail, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. She certainly didn't expect to be the homicide detective on two separate cases or to begin a romantic relationship with her boss. But the very last thing she expected was for the council to drop a dangerous criminal into their midst without a plan to keep him imprisoned, and to keep others safe.
Of course Oliver Brady claims he's being set up. But the longer Brady stays in town, the more things start to go wrong. When evidence comes to light that someone inside Rockton might be working as his accomplice, helping him to escape, Casey races to figure out who exactly Brady is and what crimes he's truly responsible for committing.
In the next page-turning entry in Kelley Armstrong's gripping series, life in Rockton is about to get even more dangerous.

This was definitely a roller coaster of my emotions and book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Kelley Armstrong is so amazing how she keeps things fast paced but hooks you in to these characters and this town that I honestly don't know about anyone else but I felt as if I was a part of Rockton.
In this third installment of the Rockton series the counsel unexpectedly sends a new comer to this town, a person that is being accused of being a serial killer and the step-father is trying to keep out of jail (the things money can buy- smh), but is he guilty or is he innocent? That is what starts this crazy journey that Casey and Dalton must unravel.
You have more mystery, more of who can Casey truly trust and more of death defying trouble for this amazing couple all while trying to keep this town safe.
I absolutely love it and would recommend it. ( )

This Fallen Prey
3.5 Stars

The isolated community of Rockton is in an uproar following the arrival of Oliver Brady, a new resident who may or may not be a serial killer. The small police force has its hands full keeping the prisoner inline and attempting to appease the locals. Events take a turn for the worse when Brady escapes with a hostage. Can Sherrif Eric Dalton and Detective Casey Duncan recapture him and get to the truth before all hell breaks loose?

The premise and setting of this series are original and the plot is action-packed. Nevertheless, there are several problematic elements including a great deal of unnecessary wandering around in the woods, a lack of development for secondary characters and a difficulty suspending disbelief with regard to Casey's actions or lack thereof.

Readers are treated to more information on the various groups inhabiting the wilderness surrounding Rockton. It is still difficult to keep track of whose who and to whom they are affiliated - reclusive loners, previous Rockton settlers or strange and violent others. Moreover, many of the Rockton residents that readers have become familiar with remain underdeveloped and this hinders the ability to identify with and sympathize with their predicaments.

The main area in which this installment misses the mark is the believability of the situation. Yes, Rockton is a town of people with secrets and it is conceivable that the mysterious and avaricious Council would send in a serial killer, but Casey and Eric's actions and reactions are inconsistent with their previous characterizations. Why on earth would an experienced police officer with Casey's skills behave in such an unprofessional manner that enables a suspected killer to escape with a hostage?

Despite these issues, the book is still entertaining and there are several surprising twists at the end that will make the next book very intriguing. ( )

This Fallen Prey by Kelley Armstrong
Rockton / Casey Duncan series #3. Thriller. Best read in series order but can be read as a stand-alone.
The Counsel is the ultimate authority over the town of a Rockton and all its inhabitants. They send a supposed killer to be held prisoner to Rockton but the facilities don’t actually exist to accommodate a manipulative madman or self-proposed innocent man trying to escape. Complications, an accessory and escape lead Casey and Dalton (and Storm) on a wild chase in pursuit through the sparsely inhabited and deadly territory of Alaska.

Convoluted storyline of who is telling the truth or lying as the danger in the woods escalates.
Thrilling and intense. Don’t expect everyone to get back to Rockton alive. ( )

This one was twisty, and I blew through it, but it wasn’t my favorite of the series so far. There was a lot of running around the forest looking for people, more than usual. I get that it’s a natural part of the plot, given the setting, but it felt like too much this time. The guessing game about Brady and his accomplice in Rockton was more interesting to me, but I wasn’t convinced by all the reveals. I was really bummed at the turn Val’s character took, and at Petra suddenly being a big question mark too. I’m back to my concern about how so many of the women are portrayed in this series. I don’t know—maybe it’s just equal opportunity badness. I just don’t like how the female bad behavior is so often tied into jealousy or resentment over Casey (Petra is the exception). Val’s turn was the least convincing twist of all. Ugh, and Brent! I was so sad he got killed!
I continue to enjoy the honesty and straightforwardness of Casey and Eric’s relationship, and I’m relieved the author doesn’t use it for extra tension. And I love their dog!
I’m still really interested in where this series goes, and maybe, with the way this one ended, the plot of the next book will move in a new direction. ( )

I may have enjoyed this book more if I hadn't listened to it via audiobook. The speaker did a wonderful job, but listening to this book the storyline felt repetitive. Such that, in trying to build suspense we watched the characters do the same thing over and over again. What was meant to be suspense was just....onerous. It you want a quick read and you like the overarching storyline throughout the series, then the book is fine. However, I wouldn't personally recommend it. ( )

[Eric has read the letter about prisoner Oliver Brady, who lunges when Anders looks.]
'If you're waiting for us to get distracted and let you run, you'll be waiting a long time,' Anders says.
'It wouldn't help anyway,' I say. 'You're hundreds of miles from the nearest community. Gagged. Bound. Your legs chained.' I turn to the guys. 'Can we let him go? Please? Lay bets on how far he gets?'
'Nah,' Anders says. 'Lay bets on what kills him. I vote grizzly.'
'Cougar,' I say.
'Exposure,' Dalton says.
I look at Dalton. 'Boring.'
'Fine, rabbits.'
