This beautiful book explores the life and works of Arthur Szyk, a Polish-Jewish-American artist of the first half of the 20th century. During the Second World War he was very widely known in the U.S. for his propaganda art; his caricatures of the Axis leaders were on many magazine covers, and he produced heartbreaking pleas for help for Europe's Jews. He also illustrated many books, including a gorgeous Hagganah. His style is unique, and I think his work is vastly underrated. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Ominous threats filled the years around World War II - Nazism, the escalating plight of European Jews, Fascism, Japanese militarism, and racism. Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), the great 20th-century 'activist in art, ' confronted the turbulent, hate-filled period with forceful artistic depictions caricaturing Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito as the evil architects of their regimes' destructive and inhumane policies. 'Arthur Szyk: Soldier in Art' explores the activism of the Polish-born artist through 38 politically incisive works that underscore Szyk's role as a kind of 'one man army' fighting odious policies and protagonists and advocating civil and human rights. Exhibition: New York Historical Society, New York City, USA (15.09.2017-21.01.2018). No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
