The boardwalk setting in the small town of Honey Springs is well described. There is a visitor’s map included though in case you need it. I love that pet adoption is part of the story and the series. As a rescue dog owner, I am aware of how often these pets are the rescuers. I’m also aware of how many don’t find a forever home. I’m grateful for the author bringing awareness to this issue. In this book a chicken from the pet palace plays a part in the mystery. Yes, a chicken! I love it. You can find all kinds of animals at my local shelter. It’s good to know it’s a thing in other shelters, too. When the owner of Pet Palace finds a body, and is implicated in the murder, the future of the shelter is in jeopardy. Roxie does not believe her friend did it. And the shelter cannot be in danger of closing! Those animals deserve a good place to stay until they find their family. Roxie decides to investigate but then her Mama shows up and brings her own complications. Will Roxie be able to save the shelter or will her Mama distract her? I highly recommend this book. As far as the mystery goes, you can read this book as a stand-alone. The greatest pleasure, though, will be gotten by reading it in order. You will understand the relationships between the residents so much better. The books are very entertaining and easy to read. Once you start a book you will devour it. So it won’t take long to catch up. ( ) This is the second book in A Killer Coffee Series. This is my second time reading this. I don’t know what happened with my review so I’ll write this one. This series by Tonya Kappes allows the reader to escape from reality for a bit and enjoy a good quality read with wit, heart, and mystery. Another good thing about this book is it educates people on the importance of pet adoption and gives the reader a warning about those pesky FBI scams that too many fall prey to. That's a lot to pack into about 300 pages. This is the second book in the Killer Coffee Mystery series, so do yourself a favor and if you haven't read the first book, SCENE OF THE GRIND yet, read the first book, get a good introduction to the cast of characters, and then you can enjoy this second book all the more. You won't regret it. cozy-mystery, murder, coffee, culinary, family-dynamics, friendship A nice Southern cozy complete with family squabbling, a stuttering romance, and plenty of gossipy neighbors. The ever absent mom rolls into town around the time that Roxy comes upon a murder scene involving her friend from the all volunteer animal shelter. Things only get crazier, and Roxy finds that she needs to dust off her law degree. The characters certainly are, and I'm not willing to do spoilers, but this is a really good read! Madeline Mrozek narrates exceptionally well and gives the Southern charm without being syrupy. A new favorite cozy. Tonya Kappes has written another captivating cozy that you just want to savor and when you come to the end you wish there was more. I love the small town with all it's southern charm. This book pulls you in and makes you want to sit a spell at the Bean Hive helping solve mysteries with Roxie while taking in the surrounding community of Honey Springs. I can just picture walking down the streets wandering through the shops of Honey Springs. I was glad to see that Patrick is startng to open up more to Roxie and actually helps her solve the murder of Fred Hill. I at first didn't think I was going to like her Mother but she grew on me. I love Aunt Maxi and her outspoken ways. This is the second book in the series and I think each one gets better and better. The characters are growing, the mysteries are unique, and the twists keep you guessing. It is a mystery that you don't figure out fast on your own but one that keeps, you right along with Roxie puzzled till the end. I can not find enough adjectives to describe how much I love this book. If you enjoy a cozy with a wonderful setting, good characters, a excellent mystery with a little romance then you won't want to miss this one. I can't wait for the next book.
