This book is clearly part of a series, but it doesn't seem to matter that much if readers are familiar with the previous books or not -- the author quickly sums up all you need to know to get what's going on in this story. The book focuses primarily on plot, but I do feel like we get a little more characterization in this title than in the previous one. Once again, I'm a little disappointed that while the three students do mostly everything together, it's clear that Sam is the leader -- which makes the touch of diversity seem a little more like tokenism.
As with the previous title, the book ends on a note making it obvious that the series will continue, although this particular part of the story is fairly well wrapped up. With its suspense, short chapters, and overall slim length, this book will appeal to reluctant readers or those who are moving away from early readers but not quite ready for thick middle grades novels.
