This is a very interesting historical novel centering around the Carnegie family who immigrated from Scotland and through hard work and shrewd business practices, built an empire in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. The story of the maid who immigrated from Ireland as a last hope her family’s survival and ends up as Mrs. Carnegie’s maid, is fictional, yet based on similar events I. The 1860’s. Clara comes from a poor farming background and her is educated by her father. She’s an exemplary protagonist; honest, hardworking, intelligent, adaptable and dedicated to helping her family above her own happiness. I really enjoyed the book and the story. I absolutely loved this book. This a fictional story, but the author does a great job of describing the American immigrant experience in the 1860s. Clara Kelly arrives in America from Ireland with very little money. Through a streak of luck, she ends up working as a maid for one of the wealthiest families in Pittsburgh, the Carnegies. Through Clara's experiences we learn about the class struggles of the time - everything from the lowliest poor immigrant families to the wealthiest industrialist snobs. Add in a little love and deceit, and you have the perfect tale that is impossible to put down. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Serving as a lady's maid in the household of Andrew Carnegie requires skills he doesn't have, answering to an icy mistress who rules her sons and her domain with an iron fist. What Clara does have is a resolve as strong as the steel Pittsburgh is becoming famous for, coupled with an uncanny understanding of business, and Andrew begins to rely on her. But Clara can't let her guard down, not even when Andrew becomes something more than an employer. Revealing her past might ruin her future â?? and her family's. With captivating insight and heart, Carnegie's Maid tells the story of one brilliant woman who may have spurred Andrew Carnegie's transformation from ruthless industrialist into the world's first true philanthropi No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
