This book, first published in 1996, was the first new translation for forty years of a fascinating work of political theory. Dante's Monarchy addresses the fundamental question of what form of political organization best suits human nature; it embodies a political vision of startling originality and power, and illuminates the intellectual interests and achievements of one of the world's great poets. Prue Shaw's translation is accompanied by a full introduction and notes, which provide a complete guide to the text, and which place Monarchy in the context of Dante's life and work.… (más)

Worth the read. ( )

This book seems to have made it to the Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought mostly on the author's poetic merits. It's hard to believe that it would generate much interest on its own. The author had read Aristotle thoroughly and understood his logic, but his own contribution to political thought is meagre. He constructs silly syllogisms to prove that monarchy is necessary, that the Roman people took their empire by right, and that the authority of the monarch comes directly from god. He doesn't scrutinize the assumptions behind his syllogistic premises at all. This book may be of some interest as an illustration of how much the Bible limited medieval thought, but that's about it.
