Twisted, fractured, and reimagined tales of Alice, Arthur, Robin Hood, and Peter Pan, as well as Beauty and the Beast and others.

Quotes

She shook her head vigorously. She would not let herself get lost in the past, making it somehow better and lovelier than it was. She'd never liked that in old people when she was young, and she wasn't about to countenance it in herself now. The past was a lot like Wonderland: treacherous and marvelous and dull in equal measure. ("Rabbit Hole," 169)

...she quite liked the tidiness of her cocoon. She doubted she had the capacity for wings or the ability for flight. ("Sister Emily's Lightship," 247)

One of the true pleasures in being a writer is having the leisure to learn new stuff all the time. (Note on "The Jewel in the Toad Queen's Crown," 268) ( )

*Before we get started, a big thank you to edelweiss , The publisher, and the author for letting me read this book in exchange for a fair and unbiased review*

This short Story anthology series by Yolen has been pretty interesting, Yolen has taken classic stories I loved as a child like Peter Pan and the Wizard of Oz and gave them a more realistic twist. Each of the stories had a bit of female empowerment splashed around which I appreciate. While I did not love them all, most of them really appealed to me.

Yolen's writing had a somewhat classic feel to it as if she was trying to channel the authors of the stories she was retelling. This was not a bad thing at all, but more as a homage to these writers and their brilliant stories. If you looking for an alternative to those classic stories then I definitely recommend this book. My favorite stories were Lost Girls and Blown away. Take a guess as to which retellings these were. ( )

Wonderful new collection of some of Jane Yolen's many delightful stories. There's a really lovely selection here, and Yolen's amazing imagination and writing transport the reader through a dizzying array of worlds and an incomparable display of storytelling skill.

Advanced reader's copy provided by Edelweiss. ( )
