I really enjoyed this book. Jonathan Morris did a fantastic job portraying the 12th Doctor, Bill and Nardole.

One part of the book I really enjoyed was when ever a Scottish character from 1645 spoke Jonathan wrote the speech in a Scottish accent lol. I love it when the Doctor goes back on Earth history it’s like having a fun history lesson lol. The idea that there is an active volcano ( )

The Twelfth Doctor, Nardole, and Bill are headed to Edinburgh. Bill’s looking forward to the Festival most of all, but they’re off by about 350 years—they’re in the city in 1645, the year of the Great Plague. The death toll is upsetting, but even worse is that the dead don’t seem to be staying dead. They’re coming back to visit their loved ones, and they don’t know they’re dead. The Doctor thinks this is unusual behaviour for ghosts, so it looks like an investigation is in order.

I enjoyed this immensely. Twelve, Nardole, and Bill are a great team, and I still wish we’d had one more season with them. I laughed out loud periodically at the dialogue, which sounded very much like the characters I love, and I could totally envision this as an episode. The Edinburgh setting was great, too, and gave Nardole an opportunity to attempt to be Scottish and Twelve to shoot him right down. (The way Twelve did this made me laugh, because it was almost exactly the way I warned my family not to try doing Scottish accents on our trip to Edinburgh: “I do NOT want to be punched in the face by a local.”)

I would definitely recommend this book if you like Doctor Who, particularly if Twelve is your Doctor. ( )

The only Who novel this year to feature Nardole as well as Bill, here we are in Edinburgh in 1645, with plague stalking the streets, the dead not staying dead, and horrors lurking in the night, while the authorities (led by the provost, the historical Sir John Smith) are deeply suspicious of strangers in strange clothes. The claustrophobia and horror of the plague-run capital is well conveyed, though of course the core plot concept was done very early in New Who with The Unquiet Dead. The banter between the Doctor and Nardole is caught well, and Bill also gets plenty to do. Solid stuff. ( )
