This book would be more appropriate for my older students because it makes your brain think a little bit! This book makes you look around your surroundings and think about what's going on beneath you and how it got there. This book gives the reader a mix of geology, archaeology, and natural history as well! ( )

This fascinating book begins by outlining its premise:

“When you’re walking along the city streets
There’s always so much to see and hear.
Cars and buses roar past and honk loudly.
People chatter and shout to each other as
They go to work and do their shopping.
The store windows are colorful and bright.

But do you ever stop and look down?

What’s going on deep in the ground
Under your feet? Let’s take a peek!”

The reader then takes the journey downward assisted by the foldout, concertina format. Each element passed along the way of the first side of the foldout is briefly explained. It begins with water pipes and electrical wires and cables, adding that living things are there also, such as earthworms, centipedes, and microorganisms, describing the functions they perform as well as what the inanimate objects are for. The journey goes yet deeper, uncovering bones and objects left from prior inhabitants, then clay, bedrock, sedimentary rock, underground water, granite, igneous rock, crust, magma, mantle, outer core and inner core of the planet. Then the foldout turns over to show us we have reached the other side. Up the journey begins again through the earth’s crust, passing minerals, fossils, animal holes, and topsoil.

The author exclaims:

“What a long journey”. It’s good to see the sunlight again and feel the cool shade of the trees. It’s so peaceful here that it’s amazing to think about everything that’s happening way down beneath your feet!”

Amazing, indeed. What a wonderful teaching tool for children!

Yuval Zommer created painted, stenciled, and collaged full-bleed illustrations with a palette that changes from the cool tones near the surface to the warmer colors one might associate with the fiery core of the Earth.

Evaluation: This book would make an excellent accompaniment for at-home lessons one could combine with long, informative walks. ( )

This book is a great informational book that is in the 3rd to 4th grade level. I would rate this book a 5/5. The reason I would give it a perfect is because of the fold-outs and the create visualizations. It allows students to learn through a detailed, self-paced way; the students/ readers are very involved. This book discusses the layers beneath our feet and the science component of natural history. The only thing I would change is the size font/ color since it was hard to read in some parts. Overall a great book and I stayed engaged the entire time reading. ( )

This book explores the layers of the earth starting with the ground right below our feet and adventuring all the way to the Earth's core. The book folds out at the end to show all the layers together in one large poster.

This is an informative fascinating book describing-the many layers of earth and what "lies beneath our feet"!Written with children in mind, many adults will find this fascinating as well!

This very instructive book simply states each layer of the earth with various illustrations of the things which exists in each layer.

At the end of the first oversize eleven pages of layers, the reader then goes back through he other side of the fold-out pages, continuing to discover more layers of information.
​The illustrations, by Yuval Zommer, are very creative and colorful..

This is an excellent book for parents & educators to use in teaching students 5 to 12 years of age about our earth. It is also a great book for Library Reading Programs.

The only problem I found is the print is slightly difficult to read as it often blends in with the page illustrations.
