I loved seeing how she has changed and grown and loved her for Scythe. This is a great quick read in the Midnight Breed world, even if Scythe is annoying stupid trying to fight his attraction to Chiara. Series note: This is the 3rd novella focusing on the Breed Order in Italy. While the stories are not connected to the overall story arc, they are connected to each other. This book in particular is a direct continuation of the previous novella Midnight Untamed.
This is one of the rare occasions where the shorter format does not negatively affect the romance or the suspense perhaps because Scythe and Chiara are introduced in the previous novella and their attraction there is obvious. Moreover, their backstories are well-developed and smoothly integrated into the narrative.
Scythe and Chiara are compelling both as individuals and as a couple. Chiara has grown from the timid, helpless victim of Midnight Untamed into a strong and independent woman willing and able to fight for her son and herself. The twist concerning her breedmate
Likewise, Scythe is very intriguing. Not only is he one of Dragos's (see the first Breed story arc) Hunters, which makes him more tortured than most, but unlike the other Breed warriors, he is physically disabled, which adds another dimension to his strength of character.
The action revolves around the threat to Chiara. While it does take a back seat to the romance, it does not feel like an afterthought and the explanation fits into the ongoing theme of these novellas.
Overall, a short yet entertaining addition to the series, and Adrian introduces the idea for the Breed spin-off series, Hunter Legacy.
