Most people called it a cult. But for twenty years, Josh and Caleb called it home. In Paradise, there is no television. No fast food. Just long hours of farm work and prayer on a dusty Wyoming ranch, and nights in a crowded bunkhouse. The boys of the Compound are kept far from the sinners' world. But Joshua doesn't need temptation to sin. His whole life, he's wanted his best friend, Caleb. By day they work side by side. Only when Josh closes his eyes at night can they be together the way he craves. It can never be. And his survival depends on keeping his terrible desires secret. Caleb has always protected Josh against the worst of the bullying at the Compound. But he has secrets of his own, and a plan to get away - until it all backfires. Josh finds himself homeless in a world that doesn't want him. Can Caleb find him in time? And will they find a place of safety, where he can admit to Josh how he really feels? Warning: Contains a hot male/male romance, copious instances of taking the Lord's name in vain, and love against the kitchen counter. This book was previously released under the title: In Front of God & Everyone.… (más)

Well, yes, this was a strong novel. A dramatic story, a love affair, lives shaped by wretched childhoods ...and love conquering adversity. I'm not being facetious! I rooted for these two characters. Courageous Caleb who lives to protect the bullied Josh. Caleb was like the capable and loyal vassal who offers his fealty to the noble Josh. First step was to escape servitude to The Collective, a cult where young men competed to earn the position of polygamous heads of families. Very imaginative.

I have several books in progress in my kindle at a time, and I read them rather like a bee moves from flower to flower -- until one sucks me in and demands I finish it. That's what happened with Goodbye Paradise. It isn't the best-written book I've ever read but it is very well done, and maybe you can guess what will happen as I did, but it's done with a delightful faithfulness to the characters that speaks to the author's talent. The one bit of "violence" was perfect. Perfect. And apparently there is a sequel. I may have to check that out. :) ( )

I received In Front of God and Everyone from the author through the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s Don’t Buy My Love program in exchange for an honest review. This story is told in first person through the eyes of two young men in their early twenties, Caleb and Joshua.

Joshua and Caleb have lived their whole lives on “The Compound,” which in reality is a cult. Joshua gets tossed for accusations that he stole a gun, which he in fact hadn’t, Caleb had. But it wouldn’t have mattered since the Elders planned on tossing Joshua from the Compound anyway. There were too many healthy young men and the Elders didn’t want to share the women, since they each wanted four wives, there weren’t enough to go around. Young men would suddenly disappear one day never to be heard of again. Caleb guesses what’s going to happen and informs Joshua the night before and asks him to wait at the bus station. Joshua does get dumped on the road and makes his way to the bus station on foot. There he waits for Caleb who takes too long and Joshua end up almost dying from exposure. But Caleb finds them and they head for Maryland to the home of another run-a-way, Maggie.

I liked Joshua’s character the most. He wasn’t an “Alpha” type of guy. Just a nice guy who liked to help people and liked kids, but the men at the compound made him feel useless and inferior so he’s insecure. Caleb is the bossy one. He feels responsible for what happened to Joshua and Miriam a friend who was left behind. He tended to take matters into his own hands and that leads to some problems. I didn’t feel like Caleb had much depth to his character as did Joshua or the secondary characters, they were good. Maggie and Dylan were interesting and the author was even able to make the baby cute without being obnoxious.

From the high ratings this book received, I thought it would be very good, but it was only average for me. For almost the whole book I couldn’t figure out why this story didn’t grab me. Finally I realized what the problem was; it was the angst and the plotting. There was loads of potential in this story for lots of angst, enough to rip your heart out, but what happened was that every time Joshua and Caleb ran into an obstacle to create angst, within a few pages the issue was solved. They were always saved by someone coming to their rescue or someone saying the exact right thing. This is a small town and there were no homophobes. Everyone was so understanding and perfect. In the end I consider this story more like a fairytale rather than closer to reality. The angst level is non-existent. There could have been more done with the Compound cult issue, but that was never covered. It may be covered in following books so that might be why. Also the story appeared to have been too carefully plotted out. I could almost tell when the author planned on dropping the next situation into the story. I don’t know if the word ‘predictable’ is the correct word, but that’s what it felt like. I think that predictability and the angst didn’t make this story dynamic enough for me. The angst which should have grabbed me and not let go, instead it was none existent because everyone was too perfect and any issues were quickly solved. The author didn’t make me feel the story.

Saying all that, the story it's entertaining to pass the time and has only a few missing words and other errors. If you’re looking for angst, despite having many angst moments, the moments in this weren’t fulfilling. I consider this more of a light read. I know someone mentioned it was similar to A Forbidden Rumspringa but I don’t consider this story as having as much depth, or as much feeling as Rumspringa. This is more of a light read. This has a HEA. I give it 3.5 stars but since GR doesn’t allow half stars I make it an official 3 Stars.

This is the second book I've listened to with dual narrators. I've come to the conclusion that format doesn't work for me. There is always on narrator that lets the production down, IMHO. ( )
