The title essay is particularly good, an exploration of Fitzgerald’s alcoholic breakdown with some pithy self-insight. Accompanied by memoir and short stories, of which Pat Hobby Himself and Financing Finnegan are pair of little gems, perfectly-formed satires of Hollywood's Golden Age. ( )

Eigenlijk moet je de versie die Edmund Wilson redigeerde kopen, die bevat autobiografische en andere stukken die in de Penguin-titel ontbreken. Maar van mijn tweedehandsboekhandelaar heb ik verzekerd gekregen dat mijn exemplaar uit de nalatenschap/boekenkast van F. Springer afkomstig is. Uit de Zelda-biografie van Milford weet ik dat Fitzgerald als een echte alcoholist zijn verslaving relativeerde. dat doet voor mij afbreuk aan zijn relaas over zijn teloorgang. Het is semi-openhartig. Fitzgerald tast in het duister en houdt ook afstand, niet op een bewonderenswaardige manier. Wellicht schreef hij ook dit deels om aan geld te komen.

This second volume of short stories is definitely not as enjoyable as the first and while the autobiographical pieces help to set the scene for the "Jazz Age" they aren't a great read. ( )
