As Allie Kimball starts sixth grade, she discovers that middle school is a very different world, populated with glommers -- those girls who cling to each other in groups; norks -- a combination of a nerd and a dork; and worst of all, squashes -- crushes that make you feel like your heart has been stepped on. With the help of her soccer team, a few new friends, and some shocking surprises from old friends, Allie soon discovers that she does have the strength to be herself.… (más)

The book I read was about two best friends going to middle school for the first time. I would highly recommend this book for fifth graders going to the sixth grade. This has to be the second greatest book I read this year. I would like to read the second addition if there is one. I would like to wright a book like this, one day about middle school to help the soon to be sixth-graders. Allie Kimball is the kind of person that ends up not caring what people think about her, and her friend Tamara Thompson ends up caring what other people think about her. I think people should follow Allie Kimball footsteps instead of her friend Tamara Thompson. - Libby Williams ( )

I enjoyed this one a lot. Allie, the narrator, reminds me of my own sixth-grade self. She makes up cool new vocabulary words to describe things and people in her life, and some of them are absolutely hilarious. The disintegrating relationship between Allie and her best friend from elementary school, Tamara, is a familiar story (and, yes, a situation that I remember vividly from middle school) but Allie is such an honest narrator and Papademetriou tells the story so realistically, that I didn't mind that I'd read it before. Ms. Papademetriou is so good at recreating the dramas and dialogue of middle school, it's hard to believe she's not actually a preteen herself. The only problem with this book was that it was too short, and ended too soon. I wanted more. ( )

As she starts middle school, soccer-playing sixth-grader Allie Kimball worries about losing her best friend and being considered a "nerd," but ultimately makes important decisions about how to treat others and remain true to herself.
