An account of travels by Bemelmans through Europe at some point in the post-World War II period. Bemelmans travels with his teenage daughter, who comes across on the one hand as sharp and observant, but on the other hand as something of an obnoxious prig. Bemelmans refers to the "lighthouse going on" when she gets in one of her moods regarding "why can't you [Bemelmans] do something about X?" The way she manipulates Bemelmans into lettering her have a dog in the first chapter is particularly unpleasant to read, in some respects. The anecdotes, which take place mostly in Italy, but also take in France, Austria and England, are for the most part interesting, though Bemelmans does have a tendency to like to yak with the high-lifers (a critique his daughter shares). There's also something of a decided change of pace in something like a Christmas horror story, which is the best part of the book. The drawings scattered throughout the book are attractive.
