I didn't realise my mother was a person until I was thirteen years old and she pulled me out of bed, put me in the back of her car, and we left home and my dad with no explanations. I thought that Ma was all that she was and all that she had ever wanted to be. I was wrong. As we made our way from Virginia to California, returning to the places where she'd lived as a child in foster care and as a teenager on the run, repaying debts and keeping promises, I learned who she was in her life-before-me and the secrets she had kept - even from herself. But when life on the road began to feel normal I couldn't forget the home we'd left behind, couldn't deny that, just like my mother, I too had unfinished business. This enigmatic pilgrimage takes them back to various stages of Alex's mother's life, each new state prompting stories and secrets.… (más)

Very interesting book about a mother-daughter relationship. I enjoyed reading this book as the story progressed.

I will admit, this book took me by surprise. When I saw it on Blogging for Books, I picked it just because there was nothing else I really wanted to read. I know, that is horrible of me. It even took me a bit to read it, but I am glad I did. While not a happy book, it is a book that is worth a read.

I was not expecting this to be a book about a transgendered teen understanding and looking back at her mother's life. Alex is a great and complex character, who sees her mother through a certain lens as most teens do. As we go into her mother's story, we see why her mother acts the way she does, makes the choices she makes, and turns out the way she does. It is a tragic and difficult life of not knowing who she really is.

This was a pretty powerful book and worth your time. I recommend it! ( )

After trying two books, I don't think I am the right reader for Sara Taylor's books. The plentiful premises of The Lauras are all intriguing with potential to envelope the reader in a powerful, emotional story. The journey depicted in this book is both a physical one and a metaphorical one for both Ma and Alex. Two reasons I find this book challenging are that I find the structure confusing and that the book, which is about a teenager, contains graphic sexual scenes.

This is one of those books that will leave you thinking about it for several days. We were on a road trip when I finished this book and maybe that gave me more understanding of what was driving these people. There is a wonderlust about being on the road that this book did a fairly good job of explaining. Not knowing if Alex was a boy or girl was a story within the the story which i never did find out but in the end it didn't make any difference to the path Alex chose. To have grown up as the mother did and to go back and try to set a different outcome of these events was a fantastic. The ftuth i took away was that truth is my perception of events and how I remember them. There are some of the most honest statement within this novel that have me rereading thiem several time and even reading them to my wife. I really enjoyed this book. ( )

I wanted to like this audio-book more than I did. To begin with, I assumed Alex was a young boy, whose mother woke him one night, packed him up in the car, and left home to take him on a road trip to unknown destinations. After reading other reviews, I realize Alex was never identified as male or female, which is important, considering some of the things that happened to him/her along the way. It was very mysterious as to just why his mother left his father or where she was going. They did travel to a few specific places to visit people from the mother's past, but I didn't understand the importance of the visits. Anyway, I wouldn't particularly recommend the book to a friend.
