This is a disappointing addition to the Enderverse, especially in light of the fact that it’s the first book OSC has written entirely on his own in the series in awhile. A couple of prefaces...
I’m fully aware of OSC’s rampant fundamentalism and anti-lgbtq stances (despite th soften strong homosexual subtext on his work), and for that reason I avoid purchasing any of his work that isn’t pre-owned, or just read it in the library (to not increase circulation figures).
Despite that, historically the Ender/bean novels have been thought provoking, interesting, and if anything ran contrary to many of OSC’s stated beliefs in many ways. Even my high school students typically pick up on the realistically written homosexual subtext without it being pointed out to them. This book lacks virtually any of the positives of the previous entries however. The protagnist brings nothing new to the table either ‘in universe’ or in terms of themes and ideas more meta-textually explored. There’s no sense of threat or danger really, as this is yet another rehash of an in universe event we’re pretty well familiar with from previous works. The characters, up to and including the protagonist, are thin cardboard cut outs, and even internal monologues seem drab and unengagaing. The few new ideas like some things with the battle room, seem like poorly thought through ideas show-horned into a narrative where they weren’t really necessary.
Overall a real disappointment...what little of worth there was in this book could have been condensed down to 50 pages or less and presented as a novella or perhaps even further and just been a lengthy short story. I feel like OSC has probably taken his ideas for this universe as far as he’s realistically able in this format, and should probably focus on his sagas trying to thinly veil and push his more extreme religious beliefs (at least those are likely genuine efforts). I love books by Orson Scott Card, especially anything to do with Ender and his children in space books. And yes, Ender is actually in this book! This is the audio version with a group of narrators including the author.

Children of the Fleet is a new angle on Card's Best-selling series, telling the story of the Fleet in space, parallel to the story on Earth told in the Ender's Shadow series.

Ender Wiggin won the Third Formic war, ending the alien threat to Earth. Afterwards, all the terraformed Formic worlds were open to settlement by humans, and the International Fleet became the arm of the Ministry of Colonization, run by Hirum Graff. MinCol now runs Fleet School on the old Battle School station, and still recruits very smart kids to train as leaders of colony ships, and colonies.

Dabeet Ochoa is a very smart kid. Top of his class in every school. But he doesn't think he has a chance at Fleet School, because he has no connections to the Fleet. That he knows of. At least until the day that Colonel Graff arrives at his school for an interview. ( )

Orson Scott card még egy Enderhez kapcsolódó sorozatot (Fleet School) kezdett, pedig még az előző trilógiát (Second Formic War) sem fejezte be. Nem tudom ennek mi értelme, talán Aaron Johnston túl lassan ír.

Időben a Végjáték után járunk, az árnyéksorozattal kb. egyidőben, a Föld készül ez egykori hangy világok gyarmatosítására.

Főszereplőnk Dabeet Ochoa, egy fantasztikusan okos gyerek. Hát igen, ezzel az ötlettel már találkoztam ebben a sorozatban. Bár a történet a Földön kezdődik, nagy része a Hadiiskolában (oké, időközben átnevezték) játszódik. Itt továbbra is gyerekeket képeznek Graff (jelenleg gyarmatügyi miniszter) vezetésével. Elvileg ők vezethetik majd a gyarmatosító expedíciókat, bár ez nekem nem tűnik túl hitelesnek. Nekem elég általánosnak tűnt az itt folyó képzés, kevésbé célirányosnak mint Ender idejében.

A könyv inkább egy akcióregény, ami egy terrortámadásról szól. Lehetőséget ad persze Dabeetnak, hogy megmutassa a képességeit, és az is jó, hogy a hiányosságait is megismerjük, de nem győzött meg a regény arról, hogy Dabeet jó vezetője lenne egy expedíciónak vagy kolóniának. ( )

This is an excellent book with intellectual challenges. I learned some about problem analysis and self evaluation. The story is interesting and the characters are believable. I strongly recommend this book. It is best if you have read Ender’s Game first. ( )
