A century of secrets... Four women live in the shadow of the Trysting Tree. All have something to hide. 1916 A man without a memory walks away from the Somme battlefield, while a young woman grieves beneath the tree that will guard her secret for a hundred years. 2015Ann de Freitas doesn't remember what she witnessed when she was five. The truth lies buried in the beech wood, forgotten for forty years. Can love unlock Ann's heart and mind? Connor Grenville is restoring the walled garden where his grandmother, Ivy used to play. Before her death, she tried to destroy the family archive. Who was Ivy trying to protect? And why? When a storm fells the Trysting Tree, revealing a century-old love hidden in its hollow heart, Ann and Connor begin to sift through the past in search of answers. What they discover changes everything. "The story doesn't start here. I need to go back. Back to a time when the beech tree still stood, when I didn't know the truth about my family and Connor didn't know the truth about his. Right back to a time when the twentieth century was young and the beech still kept its secrets..." REVIEW "This moving dual-time story celebrates the power of love to overcome the darkest memories and deepest losses. Linda Gillard proves yet again that she can write compelling stories about characters who may bow, but don't break. THE TRYSTING TREE will keep you spellbound." Linda Gillard is one of the writers that I list if somebody asks me who my favourite authors are. I have enjoyed every one of her books, and some I have utterly loved. In fact, her book Star Gazing is one of the books I can count on one hand that I have reread. She is a beautiful and insightful writer.

The Trysting Tree is a story set in two times. Phoebe Flint is an artist close to 70 years old. After having cancer she is in constant neuropathic pain and unable to paint in the way she used to. Ann de Freitas is her daughter. They have had a troubled relationship but Ann recognises her mother needs her help now. Connor is a horticulturist who is restoring Phoebe's garden and he becomes close to the two women. Connor has been researching his family and it is that story which forms the other story - that of his grandmother, Ivy and her mother and uncle.

I always like to write a short synopsis of a book when I am writing a review, but in writing the one above I realise how intricate the story is and how what I have written barely touches the surface. Pulling it all together is no mean feat and proves Gillard's talent as a writer. This book is moving and a compelling read. I loved the characters - strong women and a handsome hero are a great combination.

I loved how the stories unfolded and the way they were presented. Beautifully written and another brilliant book. There is great depth in the writing but yet it was so easy to read. I can't wait for the next one. ( )
