The Trysting Tree is a story set in two times. Phoebe Flint is an artist close to 70 years old. After having cancer she is in constant neuropathic pain and unable to paint in the way she used to. Ann de Freitas is her daughter. They have had a troubled relationship but Ann recognises her mother needs her help now. Connor is a horticulturist who is restoring Phoebe's garden and he becomes close to the two women. Connor has been researching his family and it is that story which forms the other story - that of his grandmother, Ivy and her mother and uncle.
I always like to write a short synopsis of a book when I am writing a review, but in writing the one above I realise how intricate the story is and how what I have written barely touches the surface. Pulling it all together is no mean feat and proves Gillard's talent as a writer. This book is moving and a compelling read. I loved the characters - strong women and a handsome hero are a great combination.
I loved how the stories unfolded and the way they were presented. Beautifully written and another brilliant book. There is great depth in the writing but yet it was so easy to read. I can't wait for the next one. (
