Horn introduces us to a Montana rancher, a Kansas wheat farmer, a Mississippi River barge captain, and some commercial fishermen/shrimpers who are working tirelessly to create environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and profitable businesses in the increasingly complicated food industry. Each has sacrificed their own time and money successfully brokering mutually-beneficial compromises between philosophically divergent neighbors, business leaders, government officials, scientists, community activists, environmentalists to help effectively manage interconnected natural resources and to regenerate lands and waters that have been harmed by past overuse. I found it inspiring, informative, and refreshingly balanced. I would have liked to see a convenient consolidated list of recommended advocacy groups/organizations/web sites at the end of the book just in case a reader had the desire to chip in and help one of these important causes, but otherwise I thought it was very well done. A recommended read for all. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Many of the men and women doing today's most consequential environmental work-restoring America's grasslands, wildlife, soil, rivers, wetlands, and oceans-would not call themselves environmentalists: they would be too uneasy with the connotations of that word. What drives them is their deep love of the land-the iconic terrain where explorers and cowboys, pioneers and riverboat captains forged the American identity. They feel a moral responsibility to preserve this heritage and natural wealth. Unfolding as a journey down the Mississippi River, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman tells the stories of five representatives of this stewardship movement: a Montana rancher, a Kansas farmer, a Mississippi riverman, a Louisiana shrimper, and a Gulf fisherman. In exploring the essential geographies they protect as well as their work and family histories, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman challenges pervasive and powerful myths about both American and environmental values.
