Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:A beautifully written novel about love, class differences, and betrayal playing out over the course of a fractured American family's Long Island summer from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ann Brashares, author of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.
"A gorgeously written novel on love, loss and family." â??NICOLA YOON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything

Summer for Sasha and Ray means the sprawling old house on Long Island. Since they were children, they've shared almost everythingâ??reading the same books, running down the same sandy footpaths to the beach, eating peaches from the same market, laughing around the same sun-soaked dining table. Even sleeping in the same bed, on the very same worn cotton sheets. But they've never met.
Sasha's dad was once married to Ray's mom, and together they had three daughters: Emma, the perfectionist; Mattie, the beauty; and Quinn, the favorite. But the marriage crumbled and the bitterness lingered. Now there are two new familiesâ??and neither one will give up the beach house that holds the memories, happy and sad, of summers past.
The choices we make come back to haunt us; the effect on our destinies ripples out of our control . . . or does it? This summer, the lives of Sasha, Ray, and their siblings intersect in ways none of them ever dreamed, in a novel about family relationships, keeping secrets, and most of all, love.

I like the concept of this book. But i wish the story was stronger. All the voices and POV did add to my confusion. I was happy that it stayed a family story and did not really develop the romance between Ray and Sasha. It was a super quick read. Somewhat heartbreaking at points. I just wanted more of the family bonding. We had so much drama and just wanted a little bit more happiness and love at the end. ( )

Teen book, not as awful as the reviews led me to believe after I had already started the book. It was on the list from the teen librarian at my library, so I gave it a go. The hardest thing was it was told from many characters perspectives but I didn't always know who was speaking exactly, needing to re-read several times. About half way through I realized that there would be a death and it wasn't who I expected and one I didn't want to go, as she was the most likable and interesting character. ( )

It doesn't happen often, but I am not finishing this book. It's confusing, with far too many character POVs, and the blatant sexism, and even some racism, is too much for me.

I really liked the first two-thirds of this book, and I was really impressed with the story the author was setting up. Then, well, the story took a few expected (party gone wrong) and then unexpected (tragic accident) turns. The drama created by these plot twists overshadowed the really interesting relationship Ray and Sasha had been developing throughout the book, adding to a kind of jarring feeling as a reader. Furthermore, the ending still left me feeling unsatisfied, like this family had a lot further to go before their story reached any kind of resolution. The book is well-written and I liked how the author took the common topic of divorce and mixed families and somehow made it original and compelling. ( )
