A wonderful realistic story about love, friendship and becoming an adult. Great recollections of lost summers, new experiences, drug abuse. A treat and a wonderful surprise. ( )

The book is well-written, but the storyline is so involved that I wonder if weeding out (Cary's) backstory a little, and tightening up generally might lessen the overwhelming feeling the reader is given. This is a basic love story, full-blown, with much angst and pain from both lovers. Payne received much attention for this one, but I view his other less "complicated" books as more powerful. ( )
