In this book I have attempted to describe in a popular form the work which during the last seven years has been done at Ur by the joint Expedition of the British Museum and the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania.

Foreword.

Since this book is a record of the facts of excavation very little alteration is required, or indeed is possible unless one were to put in the results of all the work done at Ur in later years, in which this would not be a new edition but a new book.

Ur lies about half-way between Baghdad and the head of the Persian gulf, some ten miles west of the present course of the Euphrates.

Introduction.

The history of Ur goes back far beyond the Flood into those dim days when the Euphrates Valley, at least at its lower end, was still a great marsh through which the waters of the two rivers made their sluggish way to the sea.
