Funny memoir with great recipes ( )

The strength of this book is the voice -- never self-pitying, often very funny, and smart. The cover is misleading; this isn't chick lit. This is a book by a grownup, about an adult relationship, and a love-standing love affair with food. You can, by the way, tell that this was published a few years back -- nary a word on ethics or environmental impact; plus the recipes are clear, written for someone with a real kitchen, and this book makes me miss Hesser's writing in the NYT Dining section so much. (Yes, I know, she got promoted to editing the Culture section of the magazine, I don't care.) ( )

It's ironic that Hesser is a professional writer, because the quality of writing in this collection of essays is egregious. It is colloquial ('Mind you,..."), it is cloying, it is insipid and elitist. There is a difference between spoken language and written language that Hesser does not seem to grasp. I had to stifle the urge to roll my eyes for most of the book, especially reading about Hesser's profoundly gluttonous escapades in Italy with her poor plebeian grandmother. Unfortunately, I read the whole thing, because I like food, and I wondered how much worse it could get. It did not get too much worse, and I have to admit that some of the recipes look like they might be worth trying, though almost none are her own, having been borrowed from restaurants and cookbooks.
