It’s easy to be an armchair traveler in Carole Roman’s informative series, If You Were Me and Lived in….A Child’s Introduction to Culture Around the Worlds. This17th volume focuses on Egypt, the “cradle of civilization.”
One thing that I learned that I did not know was that Egypt is “transcontinental country,” which means that it is “located in both Africa and Asia.” There’s one for the next trivia game!
I found the text interesting and made me want to learn more about Egypt. I often of it as an exotic locale, but after reading about life there, I realize that its inhabitants and not much different American in the things we enjoy doing and the importance of family.
I give If You Were Me and Lived in...Egypt: A Child's Introduction to Cultures Around the World 4 out of 5 stars. Why 4? The author asks the reader two questions that are not answered. Highly irritating. ( )

Children will learn that Egypt is in both Africa and Asia. It is one of the oldest civilized countries. The capital has the second oldest university in the world. The pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Travel down the Nile in a felucca or sail boat. Popular sports are archery, rowing, beach handball, tennis and of course soccer. They have a holiday that celebrates the beginning of Spring. As always there is a glossary of unfamiliar words at the back of the book.
I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own. ( )

You will feel like you are on an around the world trip with Carole P. Roman’s If You Were Me and Lived In… series. This time the author gives us an introduction into the unique culture of Egypt. Yes, I would love to take a felucca down the Nile and nibble on some aish. Don’t worry if you find some strange words because there is a pronunciation guide next to each unique word and another at the end of the book with definitions included. As with the other books in this series, the focus is describing what children would want to know most. What would I eat, where would I go and what toys would I play with.

This is an interesting and educational series that I highly recommend for children, grandchildren, preschools, elementary age, and church missionary program. ( )
