"A behind-the-scenes look at the desperate, scandalous private life of a British member of Parliament and champion manipulator, and the history-making trial that exposed his dirty secrets to the world. As a member of Parliament and leader of the Liberal Party in the 1960s and 70s, Jeremy Thorpe's bad behavior snuck under the radar for years. Police and politicians alike colluded to protect one of their own. At the start of the 1970s, Thorpe was the most popular and charismatic politician in the country, poised to hold the balance of power in a coalition government. But Jeremy Thorpe was a man with a secret. His homosexual affairs and harassment of past partners--as well as his propensity for lying and embezzlement--only escalated as he evaded punishment. Until a dark night on the moor with an ex-lover, a dog, and a hired gun led to consequences that even his charm and power couldn't help him escape. Thorpe's climactic trial at the Old Bailey in London was immediately dubbed the 'Trial of the Century.' It was the first time that a leading British politician had stood trial on a murder charge. It was the first time that a murder plot had been hatched in the House of Commons. And it was the first time that a prominent public figure had been exposed as a philandering gay man, in an era when homosexuality had only just become legal. By the time the trial was over, Britain would never be the same again. With the pacing and drama of a thriller, A Very English Scandal is an extraordinary story of hypocrisy, deceit and betrayal at the heart of the British establishment"--… (más)

This was a freebie from audible, if memory serves me right , and when I downloaded it, I had no idea what to expect. I had never heard of Thorpe, so I was actually quite shocked by the story that unfolded.
The worst thing is, I'm not sure Thorpe and Scott would be judged any different nowadays. I'm convinced that today's politicians are as corrupt as they were back then, or even worse.

Listening to this book is a great way to get to know England's recent history, and Daniel Weyman excelled in narrating the story. You don't need to be interested in politics, or books based on facts, but let the author and the splendid narrator take you on a tour of English politics of the last century. You won't regret this sort of time travel. ( )

I CHECKED THE EBOOK EDITION OUT FROM MY LOCAL LIBRARY. USE THE LIBRARY, FOLKS, THEY NEED US!

The Emmy-winning TV series available on Amazon is an ideal adaptation of the story told in this book.

The morality play that was Jeremy Thorpe's life is hard to misunderstand: Bisexual in a time when any taint of same-sex love was fatal to a career in any walk of publis life, Thorpe resorted to attempted murder of his younger, unstable ex-lover when he reached power in Parliament. Like any good scandal, this one only *starts* with the title event; as proceedings widen their cast, many renowned British figures of the era are mentions...men whose own sexual misdeeds far, far exceeded Thorpe's consensual buggery. Ironically, Thorpe's attempt to forestall scandal is what brought him down (shades of Nixon and Trump!), as he was acquitted of the charge of attempted murder but was never again any force in British politics.

A thumping good read, a slice of history that we cannot seem to keep from replaying, and a story to make one grateful the world has changed as much as it has. ( )

The bloody English and their scandals. Always about sex and class and the abuse of the law. This one about Jeremy Thorpe and Norman Scott. Jeremy Thorpe was a bent politician and a liar and Norman Scott just another hapless fall guy. The lies and sheer disgusting behaviour by so many people in positions of power and authority. God I hate this shit and wonder why I read it, probably just because I am English and once knew someone who was caught up in this and the other abusive scandals that permeate every filthy rotten crag and cranny of the British Establishment. The truth will never come out in England. The establishment is so thoroughly corrupt and corrupted that they probably do not even know what it is, look at Blair, probably the most reviled person in recent history and he is so oblivious or contemptuous of that that he is planning a comeback!

If you think that was all in the past just read this:(https://derbyshireindependent.co.uk/2016/04/20/home-office-spooks-smear-campaigner/)

Anyway, a most meticulous book and thoroughly documented and annotated and if you want to know the what the English privileged elite are really like read this book and the one about the Krays (An English Affair: Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo by Richard Davenport-Hines) ( )

I started reading believing that Thope was a victim. I followed him in the British press during the early 70's and believed that the opposing political parties were trying to smear his name.

Preston's book showed me that Jerome's veneer was very thin and underneath there was a very different man with very different objectives. He was surrounded by men that wanted to protect the Liberal Party and thought highly of Jerome - at least in the beginning. It's a set of stories within a story. I highly recommend the book. All of it - don't skip the seemingly boring bits - you'll miss important points. ( )

Thorpe dressed like my father so I was on his side although I can't remember much about the details of the case. I think the consensus in true-blue Leicestershire was they were all as bad as each other. This book has a very clear line: Thorpe was guilty and the establishment protected him. Thee is no ambivalence about it. I really enjoyed reading it, could barely put it down, and felt saddened that homosexuality was once so criminalised that gays could be black mailed, involved in murder plots to avoid coming out. ( )
