This novel started out very slowly and did not build any structure or momentum until the last half of the book. Struggling readers would struggle with much of the vocabulary and the passive endings found in many of the sentences. It is however a good story that shows a probable ending to Billy the Kid’s life. This would be a good novel to use while studying the era of western expansion into Arizona and California. Students would want to build on their background knowledge to see what kind of factual information is used in the novel. I have never read the Cay to compare writing style and sentence development. Underneath all the problems I had in reading this novel there is a good story line in there and a rather sad one because Billy the kid was tragically killed as he tragically lived. ( )
