'But, Florence, old thing!'
'I mean it. You may look on it as a test, Bertie. If you have the resource and courage to carry this thing through, I will take it as evidence that you are not the vapid and shiftless person most people think you. If you fail, I shall know that your Aunt Agatha was right when she called you a spineless invertebrate and advised me strongly not to marry you you. It will be perfectly simple for you to intercept the manuscript, Bertie. It only requires a little resolution.'
The thirteen stories in this collection originally appeared in three other books: Carry On Jeeves, The Inimitable Jeeves and Very Good Jeeves. In the title story, Jeeves comes into Bertie's life after he has sacked his previous valet for pilfering, and takes charge of his wardrobe and love-life straightaway. For once Bertie has got engaged on purpose, but Jeeves is concerned that Lady Florence Cray's awful temper means she wouldn't make him happy, and by the end of the story Bertie is single again and down one loudly-checked suit.
Most of the other stories revolve around the love-life of Bingo Little, an impecunious friend of Bertie's who falls in love at the drop of a hat. Bingo is constantly short of money due to a love of gambling which leads him to take tutoring jobs while waiting for his allowance to come through.
Quite a good collection. ( )
