A very short (52 pp) collection of the wit and wisdom of the witty and wise Oscar Wilde. Much of what he wrote here is nonsense, but much of it is the opposite — and often relevant to us today. In many ways the world has changed very little in the 123 years since Wilde died. One of my favourite sayings from this book: “Anybody can make history. Only a great man can write it.” I like that. I always think I’m going to enjoy a book of quotes or aphorisms, and I do really enjoy Oscar Wilde’s wit, but I can’t just read a book of quotes. They all run together and I never remember them anyway. Still, I read a few each day and as with every collection like this, some are better than others.

A favorite from this collection that I can remember:

“Murder is always a mistake. One should never do anything one cannot talk about after dinner.” ( )

It wasn't what I expected it to be. But I enjoyed myself and the fact I bought and read it in Ireland makes it special.

I do think I want to read some things by Oscar Wilde in the future. This was enough to encourage my curiosity. ( )

"one needs mispleasure to live happily,"

a book of truths.

--

personally, I am a fan of things/truths like this so you cannot imagine how happy I was when I found out that there was a book like this XD. You can simply go open a random page and enjoy something to get you through the day. So many different topics, different arguments, different sides, sigh. This was so good I wish people created more books like these.

this may not be for every one since I don't think everyone actually enjoys reading a whole book of phrases like this but you know. . to each their own.

nothing more to say because I don't think you can explain something like that other than a classic.

love.

"The aim of love is to love: no more, and no less." ( )

I definitely would have preferred to read these witticisms in their original context, rather than in tiny segments. I hadn’t read any work by Wilde until now, and I am surprised at his arrogance. Some of these perceptions are rather genius and comical, others are dry and ridiculous. ( )
