When Rupert Baxter, secretary to the Duke,(and former secretary of Emsworth) becomes suspicious the pot really begins to boil. In fact this is one of the most involved Wodehouse plots I have come across, with dizzying switches from one situation to another. It is very funny with some lovely setpieces. I particularly liked the Duke's efforts to conceal the Empress of Blandings, that noble beast, in his bathroom.
My reservations about the book are to do with Wodehouse blending two normally separate series of stories. somehow this does jar a little. I also feel that he is perhaps trying to keep too many balls in the air at once in a complex juggling act and the effort seems to show at times. Having said that I love Lord Ickenham and the whole Blandings contingent, so I must not carp too much.
