Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age: Primary
Review:
A boy's mother comes home from work and they decided to go to a park. We follow them throughout the different parts of the park.
This book is considered realistic fiction because it can happen today. As we explained in class about this genre it needs to be relevant in the last 25 years, has characters we can relate too (mother and child) and have a probable plot (going to a park).
Use:
1) Talk about what other things students might see or experience at parks.
2) Reading this can make single parent scenarios more understood by their peers with two parent homes.
Ill. Media: colored pencil? ( )

HANGING OUT WITH MOM is about a young boy who thoroughly enjoys hanging out with his mother. This is a slice of life where a mother and son go to the park, and spend an evening together playing, running, and laughing together. The illustrations are very detailed and realistic through the use of watercolors. The author did an okay job of rhyming on every page, but it is very hard in literature to rhyme and make it original, and this author didn’t do an amazing job at creating something worth remembering, but the illustrator made it memorable by the illustrations he created. This is a book which was created for young children, ages five to seven, and it would definitely be suitable for them to read. This is a story which could be fun for a mother figure and child to read together as a good bonding experience. It is a very enjoyable read for young readers. ( )

A little boy and his mother go to the park when his mother comes home from work. They stop to get a snack before going to the park. They see rabbits, play on the jungle gym, and watch older kids fly kites. The little boy and his mother have a great day spending quality time together. This is a good book for silent reading 2nd through 5th grade. ( )
