At the beginning of the book, it started off action packed as half of the island of Quill was on fire. As Alex and the other creative people of Artime put out the flames, they recieve word from a magical whale known as Spike that their friend Karkinos is dying from illness and about to fall off the world on a waterfall. Karkinos is a giant crab acting as an island for many other creatures, so Alex is determined to save them all. He sends Henry, chief healer, and Florence, a magical stone statue, with Spike and Pan the dragon. While the four are off to help Karkinos, a woman that escaped from Warbler warns Artime of an attack from her evil queen, Queen Eagala, and dangerous pirates. Without much time to prepare but some nonetheless, Alex starts to plan out defense. At Karkinos, the waterfall is within sight, and there is no time to lose. Without any other options, Henry feeds Karkinos seaweed that gives the consumer indefinite life from inside his mouth. This revives Karkinos, and even though he is still weak, he helps all the other inhabitants of the island paddle away from the waterfall. Before Henry and Florence left, and before the upcoming battle, Pan showed Alex baby dragons without wings. She asked him if he could create some for them, and he sketched them to remember how they looked. Soon, he returned with his twin brother Aaron to help attach the wings. Not long after that, Queen Eagala and the pirates came upon the island of Quill. As pirates attacked from all sides, Artimeans held them off long enough for Florence to come. However, after the pirates never stopped coming, things were not looking good for the magical people of Artime. Aaron managed to get help from some jungle friends, which did help, but it wasn’t until Pan and her babies, now able to fly, came and began taking out pirates. The end of the battle was when Queen Eagala and Alex faced off, where she ruined his dominant arm and he sent her to Pirate Island, where she would drown by the plunging volcano.

I enjoyed reading this book, and it left me with mixed feelings about how the series will progress. One, I like that Aaron and Alex’s twin sisters’ characters progressed, and they showed promise of strong magic. I also like the introduction of the baby dragons, and the part where they had to leave was very sad, but it also makes me ask questions about the mysterious secrets Pan keeps. Thinking about how Alex will not be able to use his magic and artistic abilities as well as he used to makes me compare him to myself when I think about my dominant arm and how I could ever live without it. Ii makes me eager to know how his character will progress, although I do wonder if there could have been a different ending. ( )

This series is fantastic. Imagine this, I read all seven books in a row. It's a relatively long series. I do tend to get bored after the first few books, or the quality drops and I give up. This series is worth reading all the way through. Loved it!

Lisa McMann is very creative and writes across middle grade and young adult. I also enjoyed the Wake trilogy. She just released another series that picks up where the Unwanteds series ends. The name of the new series is The Unwanteds Quests. Maybe the new series will answer the unanswered questions from this series...

I however, will not start the new series. Not because I didn't enjoy it, but because I have a lot of reading to do for school and I cannot allow myself to get caught up in another long series. Not to mention, book 1 just came out. So, there may be a bit of wait for the next one and I'm not good at waiting. I like to have the next book available to read right away if possible. ( )

This was a well done conclusion to the Unwanted series. The story starts with Henry having to go off and save the giant crab from falling over the waterfall discovered in the previous book. After that the rest of the story is pretty much a huge battle between Artime’ and the evil Queen from Warbler island.

All of our favorite characters come together in this final epic battle and when things seem hopeless help comes from an unexpected place.

I loved the sea dragon and her secret, I also really continued to enjoy Spike as a character. It was nice to see Aaron and Alex working together and finding their places in the world. There was a lot of character growth in this last book.

We also get some development around Alex and Aaron’s sisters, which can do some seriously crazy magical stuff. These sisters will be the feature characters in the sister series to this one: The Unwanteds Quests.

Overall a very well done conclusion to this series. Lots of awesome characters, tons of action, some great character development, and a great wrap up to the series. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy this wrap-up. I recommend the whole series to middle grade and older readers who love magic and adventure. ( )
