"Laos, 1979: Retired coroner Siri Paiboun and his wife, Madame Daeng, have never been able to turn away a misfit. As a result, they share their small Vientiane house with an assortment of homeless people, mendicants, and oddballs. One of these oddballs is Noo, a Buddhist monk, who rides out on his bicycle one day and never comes back, leaving only a cryptic note in the refrigerator. Realizing that he needs rescuing, Siri and Daeng sneak illegally across the Mekhong River to Thailand, trying to track their missing monk-friend down and figure out who has kidnapped him. Their adventure runs them afoul of Lao secret service officers, famous spiritualists, charismatic abbots, and even a man who might be the reincarnation of the Buddha himself. Buddhism is a powerful influence on both morals and politics in Southeast Asia--to get their friend back, Siri and Daeng will have to figure out who is cloaking their terrible misdeeds in religiosity"--… (más)

A perhaps somewhat atypical entry in the series, as it deals with the supernatural more fully than any of the previous installments. Still has the mix of humor, culture and suspense that make the series a winner ( )

First half was great - enjoyed the multiple story lines - but I lost a grip later on. Still entertaining and enjoyable and I will continue to the next after a bit of a gap. ( )

Three mysteries, three near death encounters, faith and atheism, animism and Buddhism. ( )

A murder mystery set in Asia, specifically in Laos and Thailand, Buddhists monks and the paranormal competing for space in the story.

I have read another Dr. Siri mystery and they do take a bit of getting used to. I find I enjoyed them when I reach the end. I suggest Read-In-Order. ( )

Cotterill is back in form in this delightful episode, in which the whole clan (Phosy, Civilai, Dr. Siri, Madame Daeng, Geung and Nurse Dtui, even Judge Haeng and Auntie Bpoo) get involved with magic, demons and Buddhism in Laos and Thailand. Following the three intersecting investigations is a bit demanding, but always both funny and awful. Terrific.
