The only thing in Colin Mulligan's life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So does running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he's gay, a secret he has kept from everyone. Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he's ashamed of. He's dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.… (más)

Love this book! Rafe and Xavier are wonderful and Colin, the dear, is a great POV character.

I was glad the "month" subtitle for every chapter in "Middle of Somewhere" is gone. It was confusing, and here, particularly given that the book is shorter, it doesn't distract. The writing is a bit stronger, too.

Great read, moving to book 3! ( )

Edit:
I've just re-read this one. Although I stand by the review below, I now need to add that I read it too fast the first time. I got a lot more out of it this second time through. It's not an easy one, but there are some very important themes and messages that a lot more people need to grok.

Original review:
I see how it is. Lull me in with Daniel's merely compelling story (In the Middle of Somewhere), and then slam Colin's story down with an evil cackle and dare me to read anything else.

Well. ...I couldn't. This one sucked me in until I finished it. Spinning a romance series on family members (functional or not) is fairly popular with romance writers, and I, being a sucker for family, have read many. This one is unique in my experience in its level of resulting dysfunction. It's well-written in that the reader must infer. Not everything is named. Much of it is merely shown. Colin can't name what happens to him. Someone else eventually does that. I love this type of perspective, deep in the character, trying to figure out what he isn't seeing or understanding. Parrish is brilliant at this. ( )

This is a continuation of the story from book 1…[The Middle of somewhere] only it’s told from the viewpoint of Daniel’s oldest brother, Colin who has given Daniel grief, hostility and the cold shoulder since finding him and a friend together when Daniel was 13. The scene at their fathers funeral when Daniel found Colin in a compromising position and learned the reason or the years of Colin’s hostility toward him. I liked the way that Roan Parrish didn’t just leave Colin at odds with Daniel and gave him a chance to tell his story. One of my two friends that have been together for 22 years went through something similar with his family so I am very familiar with the helplessness that this can cause. To this day his family refuses to see or speak to him and they have never acknowledged their 18 year old beautiful, sweet, intelligent grandson. The author did a beautiful job of telling the truth about the way in which social and cultural rules can destroy a human life that does not ‘fit’ into the established pattern. Thank you for Colin’s story, Ms. Parrish. My friend said I would understand why he gave me these books... and I do. ( )

Didn’t enjoy this as much as the first one. The Supernatural references kind of didn’t work for me. Made me feel like I was reading re-written fanfic ( )
