I read “Amelia Bedelia Under Construction” by the author Herman Parish, with pictures by Lynn Sweat. Amelia Bedelia and some kids played while building. I think Amelia Bedelia is babysitting because she is playing with kids. My favorite character is Amelia. I liked when they were helping Bill and Eddie. I liked the illustrations because there were lots of details. I recommend this book to 8 year old children because its challenging. I give this book five stars! -Jun Kim, Sunflower Class, February 2018

While Amelia Bedelia is babysitting to siblings she takes on a home renovation project. She takes everything that needs to be done in a very literally way and creates her own spin on things.

I felt this was a great book for beginner readers and a very fun book to read. Though some words may be difficult for beginning readers, the pictures and illustrations will help them to understand the context. Amelia Bedelia takes everything very literally and some of the storyline may be confusing for readers. For example, Amelia Bedelia adds a marble countertop to the family's kitchen and some readers may not be able to follow the literal aspect of this addition. The author does a great job of explaining everything clearly for readers though so that there is no confusion by the end of the book. This a very silly and fun book for children to fall in love with. Fans of Amelia Bedelia will continue to love her from her silly scenarios found in this book as well. I have a lot of fond memories reading Amelia Bedelia books as a child with my Mom and siblings. As a child I loved reading these books and seeing what crazy things Amelia was going to do.
The central message of this book is that everyone should be open to change and willing to work with it. Things might not always work out the way that you expect, but you should make the best of the situation and work with the changes or additions that occurred. ( )

This teaches play on words and is quite clever. However, I suspect it's much funnier to read to 4 or 5 year olds that are starting to really get the hang of our tricky language. My two year old was not the least bit impressed. ( )

A great story for showing how words can be confused. Also useful for teaching a play on words. A highly comical easy read for children.

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Appropriateness: Primary
Review: This book is a good example of realistic fiction because people can imagine themselves encountering similar situations. The narrative presents a true depiction of life set in present day. This story teaches about different life experiences and the reader can relate to the characters. In this story, Amelia Bedelia is babysitting two children while the parents are off at work and running errands. Amelia Bedelia misunderstands Mrs. Hardy when she said she is expecting an 'addition'. Instead of understanding that Mrs. Hardy was pregnant, Amelia thought that the addition referred to a home renovation. This story is filled with comical scenes and funny touches that send readers laughing through the rough!
Media: This book is a good example of pencil media because the pictures vary in color, type, textures, dimension, and blend. With pencils, the illustrations have various lines and shading that enhances the pictures. ( )
