In the collection of short stories by Hans Christian Anderson, he wrote of the importance of many different morals through his stories such as love, honesty, and self-confidence. Several of the well-known stories such as The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Little Match Girl, and The Wild Swans are only a few. Some stories that were new to me were The Traveling Companion, The Shadow, and Auntie Toothache. Because I have always loved fairytales, this collection of stories appealed to my interest. I found many of these stories have sad endings and made me question if children should hear the original story. Out of five stars, I would give a 4.9 rating. I am always hesitant to give a five-star review because there are books that I haven’t read that are better than the books I have read so far. I enjoyed this book very much; however, it is not my new favorite book. I don’t have anything I don’t like. There are a lot of lessons that can come out of these stories. The lesson that was most profound to me was in the story The Nightingale. I have heard this story, but then I was reminded of its significance. When the bird was brought to the king, her song was not as beautiful in the natural setting. I learned that some things are not meant to be copied or moved into another setting. ( )
