Great to show children there's more than one word that immigrants are called. And alien doesn't always mean from outer space.

I think this book is perfect for kids who may have discovered there parents aren't US citizenship and educates kids on why and how. I did however think the book was kind of weird, i was not a fan of the way it read, but did enjoy the illustration as they were silly and colorful. ( )

A young girl, Sofia saw that her mom’s resident alien fell out of her purse. Once Sofia saw it, she thought her mom was a alien. But she learns that the world “alien” in English has two meanings behind it. ( )

I enjoyed this book for many reasons. First, I loved the use of both Spanish language and English language. Words in Spanish are found in a paragraph under the words in English, which can help a reader that may be an ELL learner or a reader who may want to learn Spanish. I also love the overall story in this book. Sofia, the main character, finds her mothers’ green card in her purse and saw that the word Alien, or Una Extraterreste, was on it. Sofia believes her mom could be half alien and throughout the book, she tries to solve the mystery only to learn her mother was born out of the country and was fighting to become a US citizen. I also loved the writing in this book. The writing was both humorous and creative, which kept the reader engrossed in the story. For example, when Sofia was doing research, the writer wrote, “Wow! Mama did a great job hiding her alien looks. She had the face and hands of a normal human mother. Maybe she had been granted special permission to look like a human instead of an alien.” Lastly, I loved the illustrations in the book. You were always able to see what Sofia was doing or thinking at the moment, which helped you further understand the story. For example, when Sofia was trying to figure out if she was half alien, she said, “But I needed to find out which half of me was alien. Could I be alien from my head to my belly button? Or from my belly button to my feet? Could I be alien only on my right side or only on my left side? I would do more research tomorrow.” The illustrations on the right of this paragraph perfectly showed examples on what Sofia would look like if part of her was alien (in each of the three ways she could look like).
