The text has a narrative structure and is in chronological order except for the very start of the book! I expected chronological order but it seemed in the end more of a topical structure. Maybe it was a combination of the two. The text begins with the first ever actual moonwalk and then switches to a detailed telling of the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. This beginning gives great detail to the history of space exploration and includes a history of the first named space flights. Then the text switches to famous firsts in space exploration and next on to Apollo 11 and the first landing on the moon. The text moves on to tell about the space shuttle program, the Columbia and its first launch in 1981. The text tells about astronaut training and the first U.S. space woman, shuttle missions and shuttle tragedies. The text concludes with futuristic images of space. It includes a list of important dates in space but ends with 1992. It is of course outdated as space exploration is a continuous topic. I concluded that the structure must be topical but is also chronological to some extent. The author includes a table of contents and a list of further reading. Overall, this text has great information about space exploration but is difficult to follow along with chronologically. There is so much to be said about space that the text is trying too hard to include it all. Amazing photographs and a good book for any student interested in space.
