Dear Daddy is a story about a little girl who is away from her dad for a year. I believe it is a good book for children for a variety of reasons. First, the story is written from the girl’s perspective in the form of a letter that she has written to her father overseas. This allows the reader to truly understand the child’s perspective because it is written how the little girl would write and/or speak. Additionally, this story opens the readers’ eyes to a lifestyle he or she may be totally unfamiliar with. For example, a young reader may not be aware of the fact that some children are away from his or her parents for weeks/months/years at a time. With this being said, this book allows readers’ eyes open to the idea that all families endure different situations. Finally, I enjoyed this story because the illustrations brought the text to life. Each page had an illustration of what the father was doing away overseas, and what the little girl was describing in her letter. Illustrations such as these allow new readers to visuals the story and in this case I believe the picture were necessary to get the point across. I believe the purpose of this book is too broaden the perspective of readers about others’ home life as well as help children who have a similar home life, cope with such hardships. ( )

Out of all of the books that I have read so far, this is in my top two of favorites. The illustrations in this book are some of the most powerful that I’ve seen and I feel like a child could really connect to this like I did. In this book, the father is away at sea and the daughter is at home with her mom and brother waiting for her father’s return. To illustrate this, the author put a little tid bit of the fathers life on the top of the page and the daughters life on the bottom. As a reader, you can really see that they are living two separate lives because of the separation of the pictures. I also thought that the plot was very well thought through and you had to be on the upper level of reading to understand this book. In the book, the daughter’s favorite present was a mask for when she went under water and I thought that was well thought out because her father is away at sea and I liked that the author made that connection. Another thing about the illustrations I really liked was the last two pages. They didn’t have any words on it but the emotion that was brought through these pictures was so powerful and I could feel every emotion. The message in this story is that family is important and even though some families have different dynamics, their love is all the same. ( )

Dear daddy is a book written in letter form from a girl to her father. Her father is away on a ship. She writes of all the seasons that pass as he is away and what happened in each. At the end through illustration it shows the dad returning.

This book would help me cope with the fact my father and mother were away alot when I was young. It could have helped me connect to someone who also had a missing parent.

In my class I would do as a read aloud especially since some of my children will probably have military parents. I would then have my kids write letters to their parents even if their parents were both there. ( )

Daddy is a sailor on a year-long voyage. Little Sophie's letters reassure him that he is loved and missed, while describing for him the small events that make up a child's busy year: the birthday party; new red boots; baby brother's new tooth. Two concurrent picture stories describe two very different lives. A narrow upper panel provides "snapshots" of Daddy's voyage to the Orient and his shipboard activities; the larger double-page panel below illustrates Sophie's life with Mummy and baby Timmy. At the voyage's end, Daddy returns to his loving little girl, and both upper and lower panels capture their joy. This warm and reassuring story emphasizes the ties of affection that bind a family together even when circumstances cause separation.
