It's sort of boring. ( )

In my opinion this book is a good book for a 2nd or 3rd grade level reader. Although this book may be a little more directed towards girls, both boys and girls could find interest in this book.
From the beginning of the book, I really liked how believable the author made the characters. On page 8, the main character Beany, makes a list of things she enjoys about her best friend, Carol Ann. Beany talks about how she likes how helpful Carol Ann can be when it comes to solving problems, how there are always ice cream bars in her freezer and how Carol Ann, knows a lot of interesting facts. A young reader can relate to having a friend who can be helpful and/or may share common interests with.
I liked the writing of the story and the smooth transition leading up to the plot which explains the importance of the magic crystal. The main character was faced with difficult problems throughout the book where she could've used the magic crystal but ended up not using it at all. Beany ends up giving her magic wishing crystal to her elderly neighbor who is upset. On the last page of the book, Beany says, "I smiled. I finally knew for sure that my crystal was a wishing one". The author chose the usage of the crystal to be for a very special situation and her organization in her writing gives the reader understanding as to why Beany didn't use her crystal during the previous situations in the book.
The main idea throughout the book is to be kind to others. The main character, Beany, showed acts of kindness by giving the trophy back to the teacher when she realized Carol Ann won it fairly, when she let Carol Ann "help" her get ready for picture day and when she gave her neighbor Mrs. Kasper her magic crystal. Beany continued to show acts of kindness throughout the book which supports the fact that the main point in the book was being kind to others. ( )
