But to return to The Hated Son. It begins deliciously on a dark and stormy night, in a castle drear, inhabited by a brutal and tyrannical husband (asleep) and his innocent countess (pregnant, scared, and awake). Now one can imagine many reasons for innocent countesses of brutal and tyrannical husbands to be afraid on dark and stormy nights. But as for pregnancy? Having only one cause, pregnancy leaves little scope for imagination except on a two delicate counts. Who did it and when?
