Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:

A haunting and heartbreaking psychological thriller from the international bestselling author of The Stepdaughter, "a terrific new talent" (Peter James, New York Timesâ??bestselling author).

Now living an aimless life in an inherited cottage in the English countryside, ex-lawyer Noah Calaway is haunted by the memory of the beguiling young woman who left him at the altar sixteen years earlier. Then one day he receives a troubling phone call. April, the woman he once loved, lies in a coma, the victim of an apparent overdoseâ??and the lead suspect in a brutal murder. Deep in his bones, Noah believes that April is innocent. Then again, he also believed they would spend the rest of their lives together.

While Noah searches for evidence that will clear April's name, a teenager named Ella begins to sift through the secrets of her own painful family history. The same age as April was when Noah first met her, Ella harbors a revelation that could be the key to solving the murder. As the two stories converge, there are shocking consequences when at last, the truth emerges.

Or so everyone believes . . .

Set in a borderland where the past casts its shadow on the present, with a time-shifting narrative that will mesmerize and surprise, The Beauty of the End is both a masterpiece of suspense and a powerful rumination on lost love.

"A combination of lyrical writing and smart mystery. It's a winner." â??Sandra Block, author of What Happened That Night

I read the first chapter of this book a couple of months ago and found it interesting; Noah Calaway gets a call from an old friend that he hasn't heard from in a long time. Apparently Noah's old girlfriend April has killed a man and then tried to kill herself. He believes that she is innocent and travels to where she lives to find out the truth.

I can say that the idea of the book sounded interesting, unfortunately, the idea did not live up to my expectations. I felt that I got a bit of a wrong start with the book, the different timelines, we have the present one and the one where Noah was a teenager. And, suddenly Ella showed up in the story. Bear in mind, I started to read this book without reading the blurb, so I was a bit confused about it and that is totally my fault. That's the problem with ebook, you don't have a backside to read and if you don't look up the book can things like this happens. Anyway, I read the blurb and that cleared things up.

Still, the story just didn't thrill me, it never felt suspenseful in any way and the twists never gave me a wow feeling. The story never got my pulse racing. Well, it did when I was annoyed with stuff, like when police officer Ryder started to suspect Noah. And, I got the feeling that they did it right from the start, despite the fact that Noah hadn't seen April for fifteen years, and he has had no contact with her if you don't count the calls she made to him the murder day that he never got and there is absolutely no evidence at the murder scene to tie him to it. That bothered me, I mean if they had found his fingerprint or blood on the scene would I have bought the fact that they suspected him, but now some far-fetched motive that he felt the need for revenge and kill someone fifteen years later? Come one!

And, the secrets April kept from Noah. Yes, I can understand that she would have a hard time reveal everything to him back when they were together. But, Noah was so incredibly naive that I wanted to hit him over the head so many times during my reading to get him to see the real April. He worshiped her since he was a child and he just couldn't see the true April and that meant that she never dared tell him the truth about herself and everything that she had been through. I mean his best friend Will and April's best friend Bea knew the truth, but Noah just saw a flawless goddess.

One the plus side, it was easy to read the book. I read most of the book during on sitting. The story was interesting enough to want me to finish the book and get the truth and the last part of the book worked better for me than the first 2/3.

I've seen a lot of reviews of Goodreads that give the book high rating so the book works for some. I guess I'm the odd one out in this case...

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review. ( )

Noah, an ex lawyer gets a call from Will a friend he hasn't heard from in a while. April a girl he used to know is on life support and is also accused of murder. Ella is fifteen years old and troubled. Her story holds the key to everything.

I loved this book. It's a story that has so much to offer. Straight away I was drawn in and then right up to the last page.

The story is told mainly by Noah as he is on a quest to help April. There are flashbacks to the past as Noah has to make sense of everything. This story has a bit of everything, mystery, family, lost love and secrets.

I did guess one element to the story but wouldn't say it was predictable, I just guessed. The story did come together nicely and everything made sense at the end.

First time for me reading a book by the author and I would read more by her. ( )

4.5 stars.

With an intriguing premise and an interesting spin on the unreliable narrator plot device, The Beauty of the End by Debbie Howells is a riveting mystery that moves at a steady pace to a somewhat shocking and unexpected conclusion.

Noah Calaway is a part-time solicitor and author who lives a solitary life in the countryside. However, a phone call about his ex-fiancée April Moon pulls him out his self-imposed exile when he decides to look into the circumstances surrounding her apparent suicide attempt. Even more surprising than the supposed overdose is the crime April is suspected of committing-the murder of her stepfather Bryan Norton. Although he has not seen her since she inexplicably ended their engagement years earlier, Noah is convinced April is not capable of murder and he has serious doubts she tried to kill herself. As he pulls back the layers of this enigmatic and complex woman whom he has worshipped from the moment he first saw her, Noah is forced to revisit old memories and revise his perception of long ago events. But will this new insight and information about the past lead Noah to the truth about what is happening in the present?

Noah's infatuation with April began as a teen and despite their complicated history, he still views her as perfect and completely flawless. In the past, he easily excused her faults and he turned a blind eye to her less than appealing traits. Their paths crossed many times over the years and although April broke his heart more than once, Noah never hesitated to give her a second chance. But as he begins to investigate the murder of her stepfather and her overdose, he gradually realizes that he willingly ignored, consciously overlooked and simply blocked out anything that contradicted his vision of her "perfection".

Noah was guilty of this willful ignorance of facts with his childhood friend, Dr. Will Farrington, as well. He caught on much quicker to Will's manipulation and arrogance much sooner, but unfortunately not before Will interfered with his relationship with April. Noah has not had any contact with either Will or April in years so he is surprised when Will calls to tell him about the situation with April. Never forgetting Will's betrayal, Noah still remains a little naive as he initially takes everything Will tells him at face value. It is not until he scratches below the surface of April's life that he begins to realize what Will might be capable of but Noah still cannot figure out where he fits into the current situation. By the time Noah eventually pieces together all of the clues will it be too late to save himself from his old friend's lies and manipulations?

In addition to Noah's first person narration of past and present events, there are occasional passages from a teenager's therapy sessions. Ella is the daughter of wealthy parents whose lives are often so busy they do not have time for their child. Forced to see a therapist by her mother, Ella tries to keep her sessions impersonal as she dances around the real reason her relationship with her parents is so strained. Seemingly unrelated to Noah's drama, the two storylines finally converge as the novel nears its explosive finale.

The Beauty of the End is an intricately plotted mystery that will leave readers reeling as Noah uncovers a sinister plot as he tries to prove April's innocence. Atmospheric and full of chilling secrets, lies and manipulations, this latest release by Debbie Howells is a must read for anyone who enjoy a well-written, suspense-laden psychological mystery. ( )

Thanks to Goodreads and the publisher for a free copy of The Beauty of the End!

Here's the thing: the back cover blurb said this was "a powerful rumination on lost love," which sounds pretty intriguing to me. But in reading this book, it seems a lot less like lost love, and a lot more like a one-sided infatuation. A creepy one-sided infatuation.

Noah has this thing for April. First of all, it's never really explained why. He just sees her and instantly is in love with this goddess of a person. He holds her up on this pedestal, doesn't seem to see her as a real person with her own life and actual flaws. He keeps on finding her; she keeps on leaving. Maybe it's in her personality to leave a lot... or maybe he needs to take a hint and back off.

And, I mean, it's a psychological thriller. I'll buy that we're reading a book from the perspective of some creepy guy who can't seem to get over a girl who doesn't really want him. But I'm pretty sure we're supposed to sympathize with this guy, and that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The book's well written, but I don't like the dynamic between Noah and April. Maybe I'm reading things into it that aren't there, maybe I'm too sensitive, whatever. The book's not my thing. ( )
