(  ) treehousereader | Dec 20, 2017 | We start out with the Ice rescue team giving a presentation to a group of elementary school kids when one on a dare goes out on the ice and falls through and two others get lost in the mountains as a winter storm is approaching. Along with the rescues we also get the a second chance romance between one of the rescue team and one of the teachers. First time reading this author and I enjoyed the story and moving on to the next in the series. ( ) CindySnS | Oct 26, 2016 | This is a quick prequel to Katie Ruggle's Search and Rescue series set in the Rocky Mountains. In this second chance romance, we are introduced to the team leader (briefly) and a couple members of the search and rescue team. It appears Artemis and Derek were teenage sweethearts, young love at its best. But Derek doesn't have the best home life and breaks it off with Artemis so that she can find someone better. Now Derek has broken away from his criminal father, has his own business and volunteers as a search and rescue diver. When he and Artemis must work together to find her missing students, they reconnect quickly and without any drama. Indeed, they seem to pick up almost where they left off. While this was a decent story and I enjoyed it... it was really too short for me to form any kind of connection with the characters. I wish the time spent alluding to the arsonist were instead used to develop the characters and draw us into the relationship. I also like a little more action and danger in my romantic suspense stories... but I think we can look forward to that in future installments, perhaps with all the hints about the arsonist. This book was still free as of the date of posting. 3 stars / 2 flames. On His Watch is a novella in the Search and Rescue series. Rather than creating a short story to introduce the characters, there is so much is crammed into just over 100 pages that it is difficult to figure out where this story is supposed to go. There are so many story lines in this book, that none of them are developed or satisfying. I've been looking forward to reading this series, so I'm hoping that the rest of the books are better than this one. Overall, On His Watch is a missed opportunity and a disappointment. (
