Not sure about the pacing, but other than that, I thought the writing style was phenomenal. It was something that combined paranormal and psychological ideas and blurred the lines in between. The ghosts, festered over time through intense grief and loss, really tore a hole through my heart and gave me chills. Mysterious and enthralling. The writing is excellent and the themes of heart vs. head, romantic vs. realism, and the formal writing style fit right in with the period of the book, the turn of the 20th century. The ghost story provides some real scares, and the characters are all well-developed and sympathetic. I was a little disappointed in the ending; for fear of giving anything away, I will just say that I thought it was going to go in another direction, but it ended rather abruptly. Despite that, this is a wonderfully written book and the author never loses the eerie atmosphere she creates from the first few pages of the book, through to the end. It was a very loving story and it was almost as if the author did not have to put much into it writing this novel, it flowed so effortless. It was engaging and I would read it again. At first one is unsure whether or not the family's problem is caused by grief. In fact even by the end I was unsure of this. A book to put on the shelf to be reread at a later date. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
England, 1897. When botanist Lawrence Fairweather returns to his lonely Fenland home after an extended trip to Europe, he hopes for a time of peace and tranquillity. The Fairweathers are a family in need of healing, having experienced a tragedy that has left Lawrence's wife Julia immersed in grief and their daughter Hazel unable to speak. As Fairweather soon finds out, however, Halfway House is not the peaceful place it once was. Its lonely rooms and empty halls are thick with shadows and secrets, while the surrounding Fen crawls with menace. Julia and Hazel both seem to sense something gathering beneath the surface calm, and even Fairweather finds his rationalism challenged by a series of inexplicable events. But are the Fairweathers haunted by their own memories, or by something altogether more sinister?A traditional haunted house story set in the Victorian Age, THE QUICKENING explores the boundaries between perception and reality, religion and science, and truth and mystery. Praise for THE QUICKENING:'[An] absorbing psychological, supernatural, highly atmospheric thriller.' - Author Dennis Hamley'An elegant, entertaining and very scary piece of writing - somewhere between a traditional country house haunting and a psychological thriller, with elements of both.' - Author Catherine Czerkawska'An excellent, disturbing and absorbing read.' A good read and it would be very much open to a sequel of this family's future... ( )
