I love Lisa Unger. Her writing style is striking, evocative, and so beautiful. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble with this book. And it’s one of those instances where the phrase, “It’s not you, it’s me,” totally applies. The plot with the missing 10-year old girl triggered me so much that I resisted picking up the book every time I put it down. Having a little girl myself, I find I’m unable to read about these kinds of topics. There’s enough scary reality bombarding me from every direction as I go through my day (sometimes way too much!) and I find I shy away from it in fiction. I will continue reading Unger’s books, but I hope the next one will be less triggering for me. ( )

Tonight this came up on my Goodreads feed as a nominee for top horror of 2016. I came over to see my review from May 2016, and although I rated it, neglected the review. My apologies!

From the first page to the last, I was all in. I went with Finley Montgomery into The Hollows of New York State. There were hours that I did not breathe.

Finley, her gifts, love for her fast motorcycle and tattoos (complete with tattoo artist Rainer), hooked me like a big mouth bass. Reading [b: Ink and Bone|27276336|Ink and Bone|Lisa Unger|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1464907792s/27276336.jpg|47328227] is taking a trip into another dimension.

Some books hit me so hard that I am struck silent.

This novel does have language and some behaviors that younger readers may not be mature enough for.

It is a must read for those who love young, unlikely adults who are heroic.

I loved the beginning, and was sure this was going to be a real page turner, but the pace was too slow for my taste. Finley was the only character that I really liked, probably due to her "gifts." I enjoyed the supernatural/paranormal elements of the story but there weren't enough thrills for me to consider this a thriller.

I loved this as a standalone, but am very curious to see if it works as a series. Wonderful character and world-building. ( )

Rarely have I seen a perfect merging of paranormal/psychic ability and crime thriller, but this is it. Creepy in some places, heartbreaking in others, I found it almost impossible to put down. I hope to see these characters many more times, as their continuing adventures promise to keep me on the edge of my seat, and I already care what happens to them. Jones Cooper's steady presence perfectly balances Finley's wild young energy.
