Sometimes I think 3 stars should be the equivalent of "it was ok," because that's all this really was, "ok," but I didn't want to just give it a 2-star rating. Essentially, however, this was nothing more than a novel about a woman who married many times (including to a "prince," hence the title) and who was wealthy. Sorry to say, but that is about the gist of it. History is full of imteresting, yet unknown stories, and such is the story of Allene Tew, a beautiful but headstrong daughter of a pioneering family in upstate New York. She impulsively married at 18 to the scion of one of the wealthiest families in America, but when he died 12 years later, she wasn’t content to be a wealthy widow. Instead, she packed her bags for New York City and never looked back. In the following years she would marry four more times including a German nobleman and a Russian Prince. She also befriended the Dutch princes who would become Queen Julianna, helping her marry the German Prince Bernard of Lippa-Biesterfeld. Allene’s life was the stuff that Hollywood turns into movies and authors turn into romance novels. It’s nice to know that Allene’s story is fact, not fiction. without giving away, this is an interesting book of someone I was totally unfamiliar with, Allene Tew was not as happy as one would think among the richest during the gilded age, a period I love to read about. her life has many twists and turns, and this author is up for the challenge, well researched , recommend this book to anyone interested in gilded age characters sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

A Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestseller. Two-time Man Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel names An American Princess as one of her favorite book of the year: "light and gracefully written, it dances through a century of history..." (The Guardian) Born to a pioneering family in Upstate New York in the late 1800s, Allene Tew was beautiful, impetuous, and frustrated by the confines of her small hometown. At eighteen, she met Tod Hostetter at a local dance, having no idea that the mercurial charmer she would impulsively wed was heir to one of the wealthiest families in America. But when he died twelve years later, Allene packed her bags for New York City. Never once did she look back. From the vantage point of the American upper class, Allene embodied the tumultuous Gilded Age. Over the course of four more marriages, she weathered personal tragedies during World War I and the catastrophic financial reversals of the crash of 1929. From the castles and châteaus of Europe, she witnessed the Russian Revolution and became a princess. And from the hopes of a young girl from Jamestown, New York, Allene Tew would become the epitome of both a pursuer and survivor of the American Dream. The author documents her life, marriages, children, bereavements, and resilience. It covers the impact of historic events, such as WWI, Spanish Flu, stock market crash of 1929, Great Depression, and WWII. Part of the appeal of the book is in the portrait of a woman of a bygone era, where the goal was to forge ahead through life despite tragedies. It could have used a few more quotations from Allene herself, but I am sure the source material was limited. I enjoyed it as an example of how historic events impacted the life of a real person.
