Delivering a rare book to a valued customer is definitely part of mild-mannered archivist Anna Whitfield's job description. You know what isn't? Protecting her precious cargo from mid-flight theft by the very pilot who is flying her to Half-Moon Hollow... while trying to appear as unappetizing as possible to the only other passenger, a vampire. Undead bookstore owner Jane Jameson could be waiting a very long time for her book. Possibly forever. Fortunately, Anna's dashing fanged companion Finn Palmeroy helps her fend off the attack, but not before their plane crash lands in the forest hundreds of miles from civilization. Great, now she's stranded with a priceless tome and a rakish vampire whose bedtime is fast approaching. Why does everyone want this book so badly, anyway? Anna just wants to get it to Jane before Finn decides to turn her into dinner--or sweep her off her feet. Okay, the second option is really tempting. But they're not out of the woods yet...… (más)

The voice of the heroine is what made this book so fun. She was insecure and afraid of her own shadow but hilariously fun in her inner thoughts. There were vampires here and their mythos wasn't explained at all except I guess they were of the normal undead, can't go out in sunlight type. There were shifters and werewolves which were different things. And I wasn't really buying the set up of the shifter types. Still the story was a fun way to pass a few hours. ( )

Feisty heroine. Finn finally gets his. Trek through Deliverance country. Resolved neurosis'. Return of favourite characters but they are not fleshed out for someone who picks up this book without having read previous...a bit more backstory to Dick and Jane :-) A lot of long series confront two problems...either half the book is repeating the previous ones to catch a drop in reader up on all the previous backstory and characters which can annoy readers who have been there from the beginning or they skip that part and leave a new reader floundering...there has to be a happy medium and few writers seem to find one. It is like fan fiction...since most readers in any given fandom know the fandom...all the short cuts are on display. The writer takes for granted and does not fill the reader in on all the canon or fanon stuff but just digs right into the plot (what plot?). ( )

Good fun fluff, heavy on the fluff this time. ( )

After finally finishing the audiobook versions of the Game of Thrones series, and trying to stave off quarantine depression and anxiety, I felt it was high time to fall back onto one of my favorite series on audiobook, the Half-Moon Hollow series by Molly Harper narrated by Amanda Ronconi. Long-time readers will know how much I love this author/narrator duo, and the chance to catch up on the stories I missed over the years was a welcome respite.

Where the Wild Things Bite follows Anna Whitfield as she attempts to deliver a rare and priceless artifact to Jane Jameson in Half-Moon Hollow, only to be attacked on the plane, which subsequently crashes into a remote part of Western Kentucky. Her lone companion happens to be the highly suspicious but gorgeous Finn Palmeroy, who just happens to be a vampire. The story follows a familiar Molly Harper format with hijinks, serious confessions, a little bit of romance, some unexpected twists, and danger. It is also one of the few books in the series that does not include Jane adding to her already large collection of friends. It is about as close to a stand-alone novel as one can get from the thirteenth book in the series.

We shift back to the Jameson clan in book fifteen, Accidental Sire, which explores the unusual transformation of Megan with Jane as her foster mother. It is refreshing to get back to the basics, if you will, and see Jane in her element of caring for her family in that mother bear way she has. Plus, it has been a long time since we have had the chance to step into a new-born vampire's mindset. Shenanigans ensue.

The most recent book in the series is Peace, Blood, and Understanding. This time, we meet Meadow, a rather hippy-ish vampire with a shady past who has firmly entrenched herself into Jane's clan. We also meet Erik Weston, a NY vampire sent by the Council to audit Jane's performance as Council representative for Western Kentucky. A stuck-up NY snob and a hippy Kentuckian? The story practically writes itself. In fact, for that reason, I found this to be one of the weaker stories in the series. For one, the romantic development between the two was practically nonexistent until boom, there it is. Plus, there really were no twists this time. It was too predictable with a romance that was a bit of a dud.

Still, Ms. Harper's books never fail to pull me out of a slump. I listened to each of these over the course of five evenings, enjoying the familiarity of the characters, Ms. Ronconi's delightful narration, and the comfort of knowing exactly what I was going to get. ( )

If you like romance with a paranormal twist, Molly Harper's Where the Wild Things Bite, should be on your reading list. A finalist in the 2017 RITA Awards, this book possesses dialogue that rocks, and the characters created a sense of familiarity despite the fact that some of them are vampires. In Kentucky. Okay, the last place I found vampires believable was in Anne Rice's story set in New Orleans. While Rice's vampire story oozed creepy seduction, Harper's main vampire maintains an easygoing romantic nature. Of all the creatures that go bump in the night, Harper's bring the most sassy attitude. I also loved that the main conflict involved the possession of a book. ( )
